The right-side zipper of my First Gear pants keeps busting open so I'm looking for new ones... needless to say, not made by FirstGear.

My basic requirements are:

- textile, not leather
- reasonably waterproof
- removable waterproof liner
- must be easily removable over boots
- not too baggy/dorky looking
- not too hot in the summertime

Which ones are really good? Money's not a big object but I'm not expecting to spend more than $200.

Thanks,

Martin

I've got olympia airglide pants too... My only complaint is the velcro at the bottom of the leg tends to stick to the wrong pieces from time to time, but aside from that, love 'em! I wore them in this morning at 37 degrees, and will be riding home at around 70 degrees sans the liners. They're a little bit warm if you need to wear the waterproof liners during a freak 80 degree summer rainstorm, but they kept me completely dry every time. I happily wear them all season, from the upper 30s to the upper 90s. (I generally don't spend much time in heat hotter than that).

Ease of entry and exit is excellent. They have full length zippers up the outside of each leg on both the liner and the outer. I never have to pull my boots off to put them on or take them off.

I don't know what type FG pants you have. First Gear uses YKK brand zippers which are touted about best in industry. Many other motorcycle gear brands use YKK. So if you want to avoid YKK zippers, you better check other brands first (and you jeans etc.)

I am not sure if FG is really to blame here if a usually quality zipper fails. I personally think that the products I have from them are top notch.

But it sure is a good reason to convince the wife that new gear is in order:mrgreen:

I can't recommend any new pants, but I can speak a little to a zipper busting open having recently replaced the one on the right leg of my Fieldsheer Highland Suit. I suspect that if you look closely at the inside of the zipper pull that you'll see the piece that connects the outer halves has cracked. Can't maintain enough pressure to keep the two halves together. Off it comes.

Assuming your zipper is the same size as mine, you won't find a replacement pull at your local sewing store - even if you do find something that appears to be the right size (like I though I did), it won't work. Find a place that replaces them with YKK. I got mine done at a local shop that does all kinds of repair work (mtnsoles.com). They were recommended by my local REI and a tent company.

$20 was a much better price than a new pair of pants. Though that is coming soon for other reasons so I'm enjoying this thread and the recommendations.

Airglide-rode to work the other day @28 deg f. The trip home was 90 deg f.
They were comfortable for the whole temp spread. The liner seems to rip where it attches to the rear pocket snap. Not a big deal, but they are nylon, not polyester that alot of places sell.

I went through 2 pairs of First Gear, a pair of Frank Thomas, a pair of TourMasters. All fell apart in one place or another within 3 years. I've since moved on to the Aerostich AD1 (based on Darien with a few changes). I absolutely love them. The waist has a set of snaps that allow you to adjust it to two waist sizes: one for over jeans/belt, and one for when you wear a base layer under your gear. The full length zipper is great for getting in and out of them with boots on. They are made of goretex, so they stay ridiculously dry. The gusseted crotch makes sitting very comfy.

I am a daily commuter and I get changed at my bike every day. To pull these on and off over boots and jeans while standing and zip them all the way down is effortless. They roll up well (even with the armor) and fit right in my sidecase. When I'm out touring, I wear a baselayer and snap the waist to the smaller size. They wear like dedicated pants (non overpants) with no issue. The ballistic fabric makes cleaning bugs off rather easy.

I know I sound like I'm paid by Aerostich here, but I really just finally found a pair of pants that does everything for me. They are well worth the cost.

I should mention that it isn't just the side zipper that has given me problems.

I've replaced:

- the front zipper
- the hook fastener at the front
- 3 snaps at the bottoms

So I'm less than impressed with the fasteners on these pants generally.

That said, my FG Kilimanjaro jacket has held up well.

Martin - take a look at the new Canadian only Joe Rocket Ballistic 10 or Alter Ego 10 pants. The new JR stuff is a big improvement in quality and design over last year's gear. www.joerocketcanada.com

OK, I checked and the zippers on my FG HT Air (2006 version) pants are "TTL" not "YKK". Maybe FG switched to YKK later on?
