What other sports do you practice and how do they effect your riding a motorcycle?

I'll go first :mrgreen:

I practice a lot of sports, but of them all the one that I find helps improve my riding is kitesurfing.

In particular I practice two styles of kitesurfing.
1) Strapless wave riding with a kite.
2) Race kiting with high speed race boards

Wave riding big surf or even better big windswell/storm surge develops a combination of balance, perception of moving terrain and objects, and multitasking (flying and directing a kite that has massive power at your fingertips while following the changing terrain and balancing on a surfboard keeping it under your feet without foot straps).
Carving is similar to taking curves on a motorcycle.
Dodging freaky wave behavior in the white water is similar to dogging trouble on the road.

Race kiting is good for learning how things change tremendously with speed.

Also with kiting you can go "over the edge" (beyond what you can hold on a turn) and the result is a big ... maybe painful splash, so it's easier to get to know the limits and when you are getting close to them.

Irregularity in the water surface is somewhat comparable to what irregularity of road surface can do to you. Carving from clear water to raging whitewater for example is a bit like going from clean blacktop to gravel.

I grew up riding dirt bikes in the desert of SoCal. Yea still riding motorcycles not another sport but as far as helping with street riding, immensely.

I don't have to think about the mechanical aspect of riding at all. It's all subconscious. That's good and bad, good that in panic type situations my reflexes are quick. Bad in that I tend to kick my leg out to save the bike. Hasn't happened on my V-Storm yet and I hope I don't get in a situation that would have me react. I don't know how to un-learn it maybe spend more time on my dirt bike and force myself to keep my feet on the pegs, means more crashing though!

Another thing I've learned in the dirt is traction. I have a really good feel on the road for approaching the limits of traction. Not that I intentionally try to find the limits but I know how much I've got usually. When I first started road riding the increase in traction took some getting used to and when I did loose traction it was kind of un-nerving. Now I rarely slip on anything.

Windsurfing affects my riding by losing intrest in the ride if I can sail instead.I,d rather sail Sherman Island yahoo.

I was very much into surfing and snowboarding before getting serious about bikes. I feel that snowboarding in particular taught me to keep my head up and look where I want to go as well as how to "feel" what is happening under my feet (on the bike it would translate to feeling the tires) and making subconscious adjustments for it. It is also a sport where slamming on the brakes is not always an option, so quick reflexes and vision are really necessary.
Riding in the glades (through the back country trees) is a bit like riding down a road you don't know-at speed. Lots of quick reflexes to dodge obstacles and adjust as the conditions change.
Riding on a crowded mountain trail is exactly like dodging freeway traffic. Hundreds of clueless idiots who have no spacial awareness, cutting you off and turning in front of you.
