I researched the reverse question (new shock on old model) to see if I could ship a friend my '17 shock to use on his '09. It worked. The only small mod he had to make was to slightly enlarge the mounting holes for the remote preload adjuster.
However, I believe I read that Suzuki improved the shock and increased travel starting with the Gen2 models. So if you get a Gen1 shock it'll slightly lower your bike and ride crappier. Gen2 and Gen3 should be the same shock, except for perhaps different colors.
Double check all this. Going by memory, but I believe it's all true.
I'm probably going to purchase a 2019 650 vstrom ( the loaded version) within two weeks. I've not riddin in 15yrs. Is there some threads for people new to the vstrom platform? I don't know much; so I don't want to waste peoples time with dumb, already answered question.
Im looking in to buying a new bike, and a new 650xt is at the top of my list. I testrode one the other day right after I tried the ktm 790 adv, bmw 850gs and the 1000xt.
The other bikes I tried I only tried to compair, Im not in the market for bikes in that pricerange.
I recently purchased the service manual for the DL650 directly from Suzuki, not a dealer. The link from the suzukicycles.com website to the genuinesuzukimanuals.com. The manual I have is the one that is listed as. "2017-2020 DL650A (V-Strom)". On the cover it has 99500-36250-03E.
