Happy Friday all,

Well, after work today, I decided it was a good time to do an oil change on the Strom. It has 1300 miles on it, and this would be it's second oil/filter change.

I drop the drain plug, and I smell gas... I asked about the smell of gas when I first turn on the key - and since others had the same thing happen, I'm OK with that, but this is different. I saved the used oil in a can with a cap, you can take the cap off and think you've opened a gas can.

OK - now what? Unless someone has decided to have fun with me by adding gas to the oil while I'm not around, what does this leave? Bad rings or bad valve seals?

The bike runs fine - gets 39-41 mpg's... I really hate this - I sold my Harley yesterday so I have money to spend on some nice farkles, and now this...

Tell me what you all think - I'll be on the phone to the dealer in the morning, but would like to hear what you think.

Bikerbob has the same issue with his '06. Unfortunately, I have no clue what it might be with so few miles on the bike and I have never had this issue with my '05. Did you get a news from the dealer?

I have long followed a breakin schedule where I change the oil/filter at around 100 miles - if there is loose metal in the engine, it will be caught by the filter quickly (we all hope), so getting it out and allowing a new filter to do it's job is a good idead in my book.

I usually change it again around the 500 mile mark - then again at 1500 or so, at this point I go to the 3-4000 mile interval for the life of the engine. I think this is good insurance that I do not keep contamintaed oil in the engine during breakin - but this is just my view of things. YMMV. :D

Hmmm. I remember reading something about this last year, but I'm not sure where. Something to do with US machines flooding the air-box when the tank was filled to the brim and then running down a breather line to the crankcase. Anybody got a better memory than me? I'll keep searching.

OK. This is what I was thinking about.
This may not address your problem - can fuel leak from the evaporative emissions canister to the crankcase? I don't have one.

Some riders are experiencing surging and rough running after filling up their bikes. This can be due to gas sloshing into your evaporative emissions canister, then getting sucked from there directly into the airbox. Here's the solution:

Required: 10mm socket, philips screwdriver, pliers, 6mm bolt, two tie-wraps.

Remove your seat.

10mm wrench, remove the front right-side bolt on the luggage rack. Loosen the left front bolt about 3/4". Loosen the two rear bolts about 1/4 - 1/2".

Bare hands, grab the black side panel joining the fairing, gas tank, and side panel, pop out the two retaining plugs and rotate the panel up about 2". No need to remove the allen bolt at the front of the black side panel.

Philips screwdriver, remove the revealed screw on the front of the right side panel. Push in the release nub on the plastic removable rivet, front underside of the side panel near the rear brake fluid reservoir. Pop out the rivet.

Pull up on the luggage rack so that it clears the top edge of the side panel. Remove the side panel.

Charcoal canister is now visible. Tug on it, the rubber retaining band will pop off the metal clips on the bike. One hose goes up to the gas tank. Remove that from the canister, and use a tie-wrap to secure it to the rear sub-frame right where it bolts to the main frame. The other hose goes up to the air box. Look between the frame and the gas tank, there's a joint in the hose about 5" forward of the rear of the gas tank. Break the hose at the joint, and remove the white plastic joint. Get a 6mm bolt (I used a nylon 6mm x 25mm), use it to plug the hose opening. Use the existing clip to hold the bolt in place. Use a tie-wrap to secure the hose end to the air hose right next to it.

Replace all plastic and bolts.
