It's not a big deal but I recently discovered two oil leaks on the left side of my K4 litre Strom. One's easy. It's the generator cover plug. Just an o-ring. For the record the plug was WAY overtightened from the factory.

The other is more interesting. There's oil all over the gear selector cover. I think it's coming from the clutch pushrod area because if you stick your finger way up in there, under and behind the slave cylinder, that's where most of the goo seems to be located. The rest looks like blow by.

The dealer will fix this under warranty but I was curious if any one else had seen this too. It seems a little funny since it's a new machine with only 2600 miles on the clock. A Japanese bike with oil leaks? Say it ain't so!

Hmmm.

It sounds similar to the time I lost my clutch slave cylinder, it corroded through just beyond the warranty.

Hope not, although it's not overly expensive to replace.

Paul,

Did you have an engine oil leak associated with that cylinder failure? Or did the slave cylinder rot away causing a hydraulic (clutch) pressure loss/failure?

The mechanic at the dealer (who seems quite experienced) thinks there's oil leaking from around the clutch pushrod that goes through the engine. From there it's running down the side of the engine all over the casting that covers the gear selector assembly.

Anyhow it's still under warranty so they are going to order up all the seals, o-rinigs and gaskets that live around that part of the motor, so once they take it apart, they can replace them all.

Ride well,

I hope the Highlands warming up to some fine Spring riding.

Jeff, it was the latter. Sorted now. It's been pretty warm/dry here, so I'm back to commuting most days. Bit cold this morning, though.

No snow, sleet, cold rain, or leaking clutch parts?

Sounds great! Now get out there and ride!

Ride well,

It's been great lately, double digits and sunny in the afternoon with very dry roads (even in the twisties). They're calling for rain in the next few days, but I'll be commuting all week...

Cheers. Good luck with your bike getting fixed.

Clutch Slave Cylinder, leaking

The replacement slave cylinder seal is leaking and I'm losing clutch fluid again (the reservoir was empty last week). It's booked back into the dealer next week for another fix and an MOT. Hopefully it's just the seal leaking and the replacement slave cylinder hasn't corroded.

Hmmm. Will keep you posted. But it's something to keep your eye on.

Bike sorted. Slave cylinder seal failed (again), but replacement seemed to be a better fit.

Back on the road. Drove one of the new 650cc Bandits for a few days, but I'd rather have the DL1000 back, thanks.
