My first possibly wrong assumption is that the 1000 and 650 share the same oil filter.
If so has anyone speced out an aftermarket replacement ?

It cost me $15 Can for an oil filter at the dealership. I can buy one for my car [which looks essentailly the same] for $5 at Canadian Tire.

oil filters

In the States the price is 12 to 14 dollars. The oli filters are the same as with a lot of other Suzuki models. I think the prices are pretty high when you consider how many different bikes use the same filteer. I've been using the HiFlo filters which cost me about $6.00 each. The number is HF138 and they have the P1.0 stamped on the filter intake end just like the Suzuki OEM filter.

Fram also makes an oil filter for the V-Strom. I'd assume they are a bit less money also. I haven't used anything but Suzuki filters on the Strom yet (only 2 oil changes so far), but I used Fram filters on my prior bike - a Kawasaki Concours.

Whoa! Avoid the Fram filters. They're made of cheap cardboard and have been known to blow out under the high pressures found in high-revving engines, causing serious engine damage. They're cheap garbage.

Motorcycle oil filters cost a LOT more than car oil filters because they have to be constructed to perform without fail at substantially higher operating oil pressures commonplace among high-revving motorcycle engines.

Suzuki's OEM oil filters are some of the finest available. If you just have to have a different brand of oil filter, check out oil filters from Amsoil, K&N and Napa's Gold Series. Those were all highly rated by an independent testing lab. I think the Napa Gold filters run around $9 each in the US.

If you want to save money on your oil changes, buy Suzuki's 10W-40 motorcycle oil at $2.65 US dollars a quart instead. It's an absolute bargain and performs beautifully. Cost of three quarts of Suzuki oil and OEM filter run about $21 US.

Woofy,

Yeah. I read a write-up about that after making that post. I'd avoid them myself at this point. Guess I was lucky with the Kawi. So far, I've run with Suzuki filters on both of my current machines.

And you have excellent taste in color...besides, aren't yellow 'Stroms faster? :wink:

I love the Yellow color - and my Corbin seat has yellow piping that matches. Sweet.

Now, who makes a Yellow oil filter? Just kidding...

Those darn Frams are orange anyway. No more cheaply made Orange filters for this guy...

I like the look of the Corbin as well. I have a custom black leather (smooth and carbon fiber textured rider seat with bright yellow top stitching. Rich won't make a saddle with piping because the piping tends to wear out before the seat does.

I've heard of companies that makes colored covers for oil filters...no kidding. It would be so sick and WRONG on so many different levels, I just might have to do it for a laugh... :twisted:
