I am coming up on 4,000 miles on my 03 V-Strom.According to the maintenance manual all they recommend is to change the oil and not the filter also.I have always installed a new filter with oil change on my other vehicles. Is Suzuki correct in not wanting you to change filter?

Both my DL1000 V-Strom and AN650 Burgman have the same thing specified in the owners manual (change filter at every other oil change). But my dealer recommends changing it at every oil change, and I am more comfortable with doing that.

Although the filter is fine, it's just peace of mind to do it every time. By contrast my Guzzi owner's manual recommends changing the filter every THIRD oil change. :?

Fuel for the fire

I read an article, don't remember where, that said an oil filter actually performs better when dirty so should not be changed too often.

The problem being when the filter element gives way and lets dirt through or becomes so restrictive as to block oil from circulating.

I change mine every time though.

Just got through changing mine for thr first time.. 500 miles. On every scooter I've owned I always change the filter w/ the oil. To me.. it's cheap insurance. I saw the recommended oil filter changes in the owners manual... I thought it was a misprint.. kinda like the 530 chain!

Change the oil and filter together. The problem with a dirty oil filter is that it will plug up and bypass, not allowing any oil to be filtered, rendering it completely useless.
