Have you ever had one of those horrible experiences while preparing your bike for an adventure?

I am leaving in a few minutes for a 7 day Stromtrooper Adventure from Indiana to the Colorado region.

I bought a new Wee-Strom for the adventure, and set it up similar to my 1000. That was a challenge in itself getting all the farkles and wiring ready. More on that later.

With 700 miles on the clock, it was time for the first oil change.

Well let's just say the o-ring on the filter slipped off while tightening the filter, or maybe something was wrong with the filter itself. The photos below tell the story.





I started the bike and let it idle for a few minutes. I went inside my house and when I came back the oil was everywhere. I will never walk away again.

Off on my trip now. be back on the 12th.

Ugh.... I haven't pulled that one yet, but I've left the filler cap off when starting and other assorted faux pas.

When I did the first oil change on my 650 the original filter was on extremely tight just as the kid at the dealership said it would be.
I was tightening the new filter but it did not feel right and I could see the o-ring coming out the side so I took it off and noticed that the o-ring from the original filter was still on the bike and now looking a lot like the picture you posted. After I took that off the new filter went on quite a bit smoother.

Hope your trip is as much fun on your Wee as it would have been on your Vee. Let us Wee riders know how you feel about the switch.

what filter was it? theres so much bashing about fram filters on this site and yet ive never had any trouble. was that one of the factory suzuki filters that everyone says is five times the filter? looks like one.

Had this happen to me when I was doing 600 km oil-change.
Except for, that I did not walk away from the bike and had time to shut it off...

This reminds me of another benefit of having a skidplate, you can see any small drips. The first time I changed my oil, I didn't put the new filter on tight enough ("Two turns after gasket contact? That's crazy!"). After the first ride, I found a few drips on the skidplate telling me that yes, the filter does, in fact, need two full turns.

Of course, there's no missing your puddle there. :)

Hey BK - if it's not too off subject, I'm curious. Did you buy the 650 specifically for the trip, or was it something you wanted to do anyway?

Just wondered why a guy would downsize like that...

Now that I am back, I will investigate the cause to what went wrong.
I am absolutely beat. I will do a write up about the trip with photos (shot over 700) in the next week. 7 days of non-stop (basically) riding is tough.

That was kind of the incentive that made me do it. My 1000 was just fine, but I wanted something lighter for the gravel, and a new bike for the trip.

Overall, I am glad I did it. I will do a specific write up on the switch soon. 3 weeks old today and 4500 miles on it.

There are many things I miss about the 1000, and a few that I don't.

My in a nutshell opinion:
The 650 is a perfect commuter, gravel road, fun bike that you may go on a week long adventure once or twice a year.
The gas mileage was awesome, power was enough to get pulled over (yep, happened again) climbed mountain passes at 13,000' without any problem and handled great. It's a fantastic machine, no regrets.
