I sold my DR650 about 2 years ago, became a pain to load it up, stage, etc.

Missing two wheels off road. How capable is the 1000 adventure. I am too old to do all the single track crazy stuff.
I ride dirt roads, some a little technical, but nothing crazy. I want to be able to ride to Utah, to experience all those great places my street bike will never take me.

I am in AZ and plenty of dirt here, but... I would like to be able to think hey, look at that dirt road, lets check it out....

Your only hindrance could be ground clearance, but with the right tires mounted up any of the Stroms are very capable.

Yup, ground clearance is the achilles heel - plus the weight, obviously going to stop you from doing log-overs and flinging it into skinny off-camber sections. But, within reason, the DL1k is very capable. I've taken mine and the 650 into some pretty hairy offroad and it does the job.

It's a different animal tho, you have to treat it more like a fat horse that you point and trust it to go...no sticking legs out once it starts to tip, and pivot turns ain't happening, so things like line selection and momentum are super important.

Most everyone I see that has a hard time on the big bikes offroad are scared of the weight/drops and ride too timid...the millisecond it starts losing traction or the front starts to go they chop the throttle, try to save it, presto! Dirt nap!

Good tires, trusting your bike, and letting it do the work is super important with a liter bike in the dirt.

Plus, you gotta make a deal with yourself that if you commit to riding a big piggie offroad that you're going to break stuff, maybe expensive stuff. It's fait accompli, so if you're gonna cry when the side panels get gouged and have it ruin your ride better just buy a different bike for that stuff.

Get the engine bars, skid plate, extra shift lever, barkbusters & aluminum handlebars.

Usually in these type discussions people don't mention picking up a 500 lb motorcycle. That's what stops me from going down anything remotely technical.

I can pick up the bike when it's laid over nicely on its side but don't want to do that more than a couple of times a day!

Now if the bike winds up in the dirt with the wheels higher than the tank.... :frown2:

IMO, you are better off with the DR650 for anything off-road, and it does a decent job on the highway. But then, you know what a great bike it is. I'd be leary about taking either V-strom anywhere but well-groomed dirt or gravel, as has been noted, a drop could do big $$ damage and it is very heavy to pick up.

It'll do more than you might think if you have the skills (and so would any other streetbike, for that matter), but as you would expect from a tall 500+ pound bike, it's an enormous unwieldy pig off-road. With any sand or mud, fuhgeddaboutit. And you'll be buying tires by the truckload -- decently knobbish tires don't last very long at all.

Honestly, if dirt roads and such are a regular part of the menu, I'd go with the slightly lighter DL650 rather than a DL1000. Or a real dual-sport like a KLR or DR. You'll notice a KLR650 is in my stable for this sort of thing.

I consider my Vee more of a sport-tourer with suspension slightly better suited for crappy pavement.
