Just got my free OEM hardbags from the end of year promotion. As I was browsing the instructions I noticed a max capacity of 6.5 lbs per bag. Are they kidding? I know manufacturers tend to be conservative, but I think that's a bit ridiculous unless they're made of cardboard and bubblegum. Anyway, they look nice, I was going to sell them, but now I'm not sure. Decisions, decisions.

I haven't had my bike all that long but recently did about 3K miles, with both bags loaded to the gills, with no problems. I don't know what they weighed but easily 3X that amount. I really had too much stuff. I have to learn to load lighter as I never use it all.

Edit to add, I very much like the bags although the bags on that rack are very wide. When not on a trip I remove both bags and rack and just run with my small JCW top box.

I'm assuming you're referring to the aluminum ones. I did a 6500km trip last summer and they were easily loaded with 20 lbs of stuff each. I even had a 15 lbs dry bag strapped on top of the large one. No problems except with the rack that broke. I had it re-welded. Like someone said in another thread I think that they are referring to the lid. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's the weight limit for the lid, if you're trying to rest stuff on it while it's open. I don't know what the actually limit of the panniers themselves are, but I've had mine completely full heavy stuff - beer, milk, orange juice, etc - and they're very stable.

I wonder if the checkout clerk realized you were on a motorcycle when you were paying for all that stuff?

Another  for admitting to having 5 cats and using your bike for this purpose! Awesomeness.

Provisions for owning 5 cats and refusing to drive the car to work...

Where did you get those handles for your side bags? Do they work as tie downs for the top of the side bags too?
