North America Brit Brothers Big Trip

2441 Views 17 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  booghotfoot
A friend and I are in a fortunate position and are planning a BIG once in a lifetime type trip around N.America next year for 4 -5 months starting end May - camping, roughing it, friends floors and hotels. We have a skeleton route plan and no real deadlines to hit.
Roughly ship our bikes in to Halifax Nova Scotia. St John's, Happy Valley Goose Bay (Newfoundland Labrador) Niagara Falls, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Whitehorse (Pruddhoe Bay - possibly), Kenai Peninsula, Vancouver/Seattle, then South by as many National Parks and places of interest as we can to finish Houston or LA.
We realise that we're going to need tyres and servicing along the way.
Polite comments welcome! Thanks from Brit brothers.

With 4-5 months, I would recommend the Blue Ridge Parkway and may as well ride the Tail of the Dragon when you finish. There is great riding in the Appalachian mountains.

I'm envious.

Welcome, in advance.
Best Biking Roads Check out this website as you plan and definitely have it on your smart phones as you travel. It has a handy feature "Rides Near Me". I use it when I get to an area that generally looks good and I want to make the best use of my time. The content is detailed ride routes that are peer created and reviewed. Combined with a modern weather app you can maximize the great memories and adapt your plans on the fly.
PS: Northern California ... just say'n

Brit Brothers,

Enjoy the moto prep and planning processes. When you have a plan please don't feel that you must stick with it, trip plans are a outline of ideas that are edited as you travel.

Canada and the US comprise a vast area. Enjoy the variety of terrain and weather systems.

See Utah , if nothing else. All of it.Just not on the weekends in national parks, state parks. Get a national park pass to enjoy some with a one time fee. Any where in our side of the big pond, avoid twilight & night riding.Too many 2 & 4 legged animals. Bring bug spray.
Your accent will go a long way!

If you are in South central Pennsylvania and need tires let me know. I have a tire machine, lift, tools and not afraid to use them. I'm about 20 minutes east of Gettysburg.

God save the king!

Thanks for all your responses. Much appreciated and I'll be in touch.
For sure hit Colorado and Utah. Start with a ride around the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia . Ride the twisty roads in North Carolina and West Virginia. Niagara Falls will be a let down and worth a pass! Black Flies in May/June in Canada will make you think you have found Hell. Pass through Banff National park (Don't speed). Get yourselves in a Red Wood forest somewhere.

Northern Arizona has some nice mountain roads, as well as other scenic features, the most famous of course being the Grand Canyon. Worth a look, even if it is just a big hole in the ground.

I'll have a look at throttle locks. Over here we can't do more than half a mile without throttle input! 🤪
I've got a plastic Throttle Rocker and a Cramp Buster. I use them sometimes on wide open roads like the Interstate system. They rotate out of the way when I don't want to use them. They don't lock the throttle position, you must keep your hand on the throttle, but they allow you to change your hand position.

For me it's not my throttle hand that needs relief, it's my clutch hand. Long droning Interstate runs make my left hand get bored from inactivity.
Check out the tent space map thread on ADVRider. Lots of places to stay for free along your route. Also lots of folks willing to offer help in times of need.

The blue ridge parkway is great if you have time to ride in the eastern states for a while. Tones of great riding in back country of Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Kentucky too.

I live in Minnesota, and can recommend the drives along Lake Superior's South shore (Wisconsin and Michigan) and North shore in Minnesota.

I love riding the mountains in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Montana.

On the way to Alaska be sure to take different routes up and back... One west and one east of the Canadian Rockies.

In Alaska, the Kenia is great, so is Valdez, the interior, and the Top of The World highway.

Best of luck on your trip.
