I want to put a terminal strip with switched power. Have the relay and everything but having some problem finding the terminal strip - but will hit more auto stores on Monday. Write up on the relay was very helpful....

My question is where is the easiest place to put a cable splice on the tail light circuit so that I can have switched power to the relay? I read some other posts but am more confused now than before. Can anyone tell me (better yet - post a picture) of the easiest, closest place to the battery that I can get to the tail light circuit (yes, I am a mechanical dummy)....

Or is there a better line to tap into?

Thanks.

Probably the best place is the orange/green wire at the rear brake switch. The brown wire in the sheath along the left side of the under seat tray will also work. Ignore the dots as they are not part of the color code. Eastern Beaver makes trigger wire connections that plug right in so you don't have to cut into the stock harness.

Considering I am a piss poor mechanic, I've always worried that I would make a splice in the brake light wire that would fail at some point and leave me unknowingly without brake lights. And I even know how to solder and shrink tube.

So I try to use a switched source like a turn signal or running light. Half the time I don't remember the turn signal anyway, so it is no big deal if it goes. I just try to make the most of my limitations. You, on the other hand, will probably have no such problems.

I was wanting to use the running light as well (not brake). I assume the brown wire along the frame is the running light - correct?
It's the tail and license light hot. The O/G wire on the rear brake light switch is NOT the brake light wire. It is the ignition on hot wire that supplies the switch. The switch has to get power from somewhere to light the brake light. The O/G wire is hot whenever the ignition is on and the W/B wire is hot only when the brake is used. You guys jumped to wrong conclusions. Orange/green wires are all hot when the ignition switch is on and they are powered off the Signals fuse. The brown wire will also be hot if the ignition switch is in the Park position. That's the effective difference between the two.

I like the brown wire option in my case because I power a power outlet.(through a relay of course) This way I can use the power outlet for ..... say my air pump ... without having the headlights on.
It just seems to me that the brown wire gives you more options because of the reason Grey Wolf gave above.

Thanks for clearing that up and the help again Greywolf. I wasn't jumping to conclusions...when it comes to mechanics and the new bike, all I can say is "ignorance is bliss" and I am a very, very happy man! :yesnod:

Thanks again buddy. I will try and trace the brown with spots wire. Or the O/G.

Will let you know if I have success.

Greywolf, one more question.....

What is the gauge of those wires - do you know? I am going to use one of those "clip on" type connections and want to make sure I use the right one.

Thanks in advance buddy!
