Just discovered this forum tonight, and am seeking any and all advice about my 650. I bought it in July of '04 and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute--until Sept. 12 of this year. It had previously always started instantly and run perfectly, but on that day it quit running on my way to work after about 100 feet. It first began to run very rough, then seemed to only run on one cylinder, then no cylinders. It would not fire at all after that, so I eventually got it home, where it sat for a week. I decided to see if it would fire, and it did, just like always. When I tried to ride it, though, at sputtered and stalled like before. (This was after it had been out of warranty for a few weeks, of course.) I eventually got it to a dealer, who did an Inspection and Report (which ballooned into an over $300 bill, but that's another story...). They checked out "everything", and everything checked out. There was no code to help out. So I took home a bike that I still couldn't ride. I finally got an EFI warning a few weeks later. Basically it will start and idle all day, but as soon as there's a load on it, it sputters and dies. Any ideas? They want me to put a new computer on it, but I'm not exactly in a position to throw that kind of money for possibly nothing. Thanks.

I was one of the ones with bad plug caps.

This does not sound exaclty like the cap issue I had. My bike would simply run rough when loaded heavy (hard acceleration) or stall when taking off if I wasn't smooth with the clutch, but would always restart and run ok above 5,000 rpm. Oh, and it was only when the bike was warm that this happend.

Will the bike run at all other than at idle?

Silly question, but have you dumped the gas and refilled?

i dont think asking about the fuel is silly at all...it sounds like it could be that indeed...and shame on the dealer for robbing you, i would have put up such a fight that at the very least the next computer time would be free...you should insist on that. they dont sound very competent if you ask me.

He Pm'd me and said he has already tried fresh gas.

I hope this doesn't start happening to the "older" bikes. It has been nice having a boring :roll: bike.

I also hope Richard checks in with his progress and somebody here can come up with some help.

It's just a hunch, but there may be something obstructing fuel flow from the tank to the fuel injectors.
Pretty much the same thing happens when in-line fuel filters (cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.) become clogged and need to be cleaned or replaced.
There are two fuel filters inside the fuel pump assembly, which is inside the fuel tank; one filter is for low pressure (like idling) and the other is for high pressure (like accelerating under load).
The dealer should have checked fuel pressure when Richard brought in the bike for service, and at least done a test drive before giving up with a large bill for zero results toward customer confidence. --- But as Teddyrob said, the dealership may be incompetent. ---
New Computer? I would strongly disagree with that remedy until all other possibilities for the problem were carefully eliminated; starting with the most obvious point of origination, which, in this case, seems to be none other than fuel deprivation.

My money goes on a partially plugged fuel filter. Pressure check won't necessarily show a plugged filter as long as the pump is working normally. The line will pressurize OK, but the restricted flow through the filter will not deliver sufficient fuel to run at any speed beyond idle. Precisely the behavior you're experiencing. Remove the tank, pull the pump/filter assembly and check the filter. Good news: this is quite simple - bad news: if it is the filter, that assembly will cost you $170.. (!)

non running DL650--new wrinkle

Ok, boyz and gurlz, here is yet another new wrinkle to add to the mystery. Today was in the low 40s with clear roads (for now)--time to take out the DL again to see if it somehow fixed itself (haha). Sitting in my driveway, I noticed it ran rough almost immediately upon putting it into first gear. I discovered that it ran "normally" as soon as I put it in neutral. I repeated this several times, same behavior. Anybody have any thoughts? I really appreciate all the feedback I've received so far. Thanks to everyone! Just realize that it will probably be some time before I can really get out and tacke this.

I fully agree!...that or some other safety switch

Good idea on the side stand switch! Could be it's just a tad out of adjustment or the connector is making intermittent contact.
Heck yeah, that's well worth looking into.

I assume you had the sidestand up, since it wouldn't run at all in first gear if it were down, so it's unlikely to be the sidestand switch. There is normally some drag in the clutch - you can feel it by puting the bike in first with the motor off and trying to push the bike with the clutch in. Therefore, when you put it in first, the motor experiences more load from the transmission countershaft, because the clutch doesn't totally disengage, particularly when the oil is cold.. The increased load make s the uneven idle more apparent. You need to focus on fuel system and ignition.

...OK, give this a try if you can: If theres a center stand on your strom, put it in first gear and let the clutch out while making sure your rear wheel does not touch the ground. What happens?

Mystery Solved!!!!!

And the prize goes to......all you troopers (mattman, spdrgr, others) who suspected the sidestand switch, or thereabouts. More specifically, the connector to the switch was bad, so the mechanic got rid of it entirely and hard-wired the switch. Life is good again, and I can now resume riding the crap out of my 650. Thanks again for all the commentary.

Nah, I had my Honda ST1300 to ride. Let's just say that I'm glad to have a bike for at least two of my personalities now :D I'd forgotten how much FUN the V Strom is...
