..guess I'm at where many of you have been, on the verge of changing rides and a little unsure which way to jump.

For a few weeks I've been lurking on this forum and reading many various postings, not only favorably impressed by the broad range of topics, but by the participants that are so helpful.

Here's where I'm at, at present I ride a 2004 750 Shadow Aero, has been a wonderful 1st bike. The first time I sat on a motorcycle was at age 50 when I was taking my riding course (2 1/2 yrs ago)...speak of a learning curve! But now I have this unexplainable itch to change to the Vee or Wee. Trying to be completely honest with myself as to my riding needs and desires, this is how it comes out:

as a commuter bike - 9 or 10 months of the year.
as a solo day ride to travel the wonderful scenery of British Columbia (and the Pacific Northwest) - probably 3 to 4 times a month. No "rough off road" stuff, but some gravel & dirt roads that my Aero doesn't have the heart for......
and as a ride to share with my wife for short getaway weekends - maybe once a month during summer months. (maybe camping, but probably B & B's and such)


I'm quite aware of rising gas prices, so fuel economy is a plus. My wife and I would have a combined weight of approx. 350 lbs., I tend to shy away from freeways and stick to secondary highways, where I can cruise about 90-100 kph. Obviously one cannot ignore them completely, so is nice to be able to keep up with traffic flow as needed. The Aero I think is rated at approx. 45 hp., so it's no screaming eagle, so either the wee or the vee would be a considerable change.

The farkles (interesting term) that I would add, would be a high windscreen, (to beat off the rain that we get so much of) and those spacious luggage sets that I see in your pics.

Oh yes, I remember reading some posts about valve adjustments being necessary. (my Aero needs them annually, and I don't enjoy that maintenance bill) How often is that needed, and what does the dealer generally charge for that service? I've spoken with a couple of V-strom owners here that gave me the impression that they haven't had the valves adjusted, as not being necessary...?

Thanks for allowing me to ramble on, so from reading my own post to this point, I can probably answer my own question as to what would be a good fit. Seems like the "wee" would work well. But I'm open to suggestions that you all my have....:) The only nagging concern is the aspect of riding double on it, guess I can only relate to my Aero ...... we're good for "really" short trips to the lake for a picnic, but it does labor, so I think anyways.

Looking forward to responses, views and opinions. But mostly looking forward to riding a Vee or a Wee!!!

Either bike will suit you great if it's just a matter of what will work.

The Wee will get better gas mileage. Unless you're trying to keep up with a Vee.
The Vee has more power!

The Wee is cheaper to insure.
The Vee has more power!

The Wee looks lopsided from the back.
The Vee has more power!

The Wee needs handguards added to look more like a Vee.
The Vee has more Power!

Wee riders think the Wee is more flickable.
The Vee has more power!

The Wee will get the job done.
The Vee stirs the soul!

Did I mention the Vee has more power!

Buy the one you want. You're welcome either way.

Although I have heard that those V-strom owners who are "twin pipers" have short term memory loss and end up repeating themselves endlessly. :)

I just started riding about 20 months ago, at age 44, and my first bike was an '84 Shadow VT500C. The V-Strom was such a dramatic improvement in comfort (butt, hips, legs) and handling that I couldn't believe I had actually enjoyed riding my Shadow!

I'm not a speed demon anymore, and like to keep the cruising speeds less than 60mph mostly to keep the wind noise down. The DL650 accelerates plenty fast for me, even with a passenger and all the luggage. Won't win any races in that condition, but I don't feel like I'm in danger, either.

As far as two-up comfort, you really need to go sit on 'em with your wife and see what she thinks. The seats are somewhat different, 'though the peg placement, where a top box would sit, and the handle placement are the same. My wife thinks the passenger seat on the 'Strom is more comfortable than on her old V-Star or on her current BMW F650. But my sons both find the BMW more comfortable than the 'Strom. Could be that the psychology of sitting that close to Mom is preferable to sitting that close to Dad...

so if I am to understand you correctly, your saying that the Vee "has more power"...
