No start with kickstand down?

Hi-
Looking to diagnose a new to me 2012 vstrom. Will not start in neutral until the kickstand is up. Also notice the “neutral” light is always on. Yesterday being the exception, there was heavy rain and the highbeam light came on and the gear indicator also came back on, didn’t realize it was out for the time I’ve on the bike. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you

Sounds like a problem with the gear position switch.

Or the clutch switch.

Shorted wires?

Try cleaning the gear indicator switch contacts.

With that constellation of symptoms, I'd probably start by checking and cleaning the large electrical connector behind the left side fairing at the front.

Fantastic thank you. Yeah the clutch needs to be pulled in even with the stand up and in neutral. Assuming that’s not how it should be? Thanks again

Absolutely not an expert on your generation of bike, but as far as I know all Stroms have clutch switches, so you need to pull the clutch too start, no matter what.

Not when it's in neutral, at least not on a gen3. I'm (embarrassingly) not sure whether the same was true of my gen1.

You will need to pull the clutch lever in for every start no matter what.

Do you get a CHEC displayed up on the dash ?

If you get the CHEC and it goes out when the stand is lifted that means the bike thinks it is in gear.

It could be a number of things including the 7 pin flasher relay.

Neutral, sidestand up, definitely need to pull clutch in to start on my 2012. Yours is behaving normally.
Neutral light should go out when shifting down to first gear and 1 should be displayed so your gear indicator may be malfuntioning but this should not affect driveability, unsure about that high beam…was it always on high beam and the indicator light just came on?

The OP is saying the bike will not start when in neutral with the stand down, that is not normal.

But it will start with the stand up. !!

That’s correct. I apologize for resurrecting the thread, still can’t figure out why the bike will never start with the stand down.

There is something not right.

If the bike thinks it is in gear it will not start with the stand down.

Does the motor cut out if you put the stand down when in neutral and the motor is running ?

You can join the wires at the stand switch but then it will start when in gear so you need to be careful about that.

My 650 can be started with the stand down, in neutral, with the clutch in, but will stop if a gear is selected while the stand is still down.

Yes, that’s the issue, clutch in standup will start, neutral, stand down it shuts off

In the past, I had a 2012 Wee. Now, I have a 2014 Wee.

For both bikes, they would / will start, with stand down, in neutral, and clutch pulled in.

That's all I can offer. No idea of the problem, with the OP's bike. Good luck, though.

You have just added the information needed.

If the motor shuts off when you put the stand down the bikes ECU thinks it is in gear.

The gearbox is in neutral but that signal is not getting to the ECU

So you should look at the gear position switch or its wires.
