So I've done all the research that I can before purchasing my first Strom... and I just have to get some of your opinions on one final question I have.

After doing much reading and speaking with others about the merits of each bike, the overwhelming favourite is the 650.. in which case making my mind would be simple; however, I am extrodinarily tall at 6'6". Soooo.....does fit trump everything else?? Am I better suited to the 1" higher seat and higher centre of gravity???

I know this topic has been beat to death, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm 6'3" and I have the 1000 and it fits me pretty well. My advice is to take both for an extended ride (not just around the block) and see which one "feels" better to you. Are you planning on doing any 2 up riding? Figure out how much weight you might be hauling around because you may want the added oomph of the liter bike. As you may well already have noticed the 650 and 1000 camps can be pretty vocal about why they're bikes are better (or why the other's a wannabe). I'm sure that you could find one of each pretty close to you and the owners will probably even let you test ride 'em. Be realistic in your goals regarding riding style and you'll come out fine, either way welcome to the fold!

You are not extraordinarily tall!! Hell I am 6'7" and I only consider myself taller than most.....there are guys riding stroms that are 6'10 - course anyone I have to look up to extraordinarily tall ;)

I rode a 650 for 11 day through NZ - loved it- perfect bike for those little twisty roads and max speedlimits of 100kph! Got home and bought a 1000 lightly used, shortly thereafter (while the advise to but a day or two of riding is good advice- it aint' gonna happen you and I both know it).

I ended up buying raising with new dogbones to add an inch because I had put lowering brackets for the pegs (draggin parts if you don't compensate).

The ride difference is negligible - oh you will hear the 650 is flickable, and better off road, yada yada yada. The 1000 is just fine, 40 lbs heavier, and shitload quicker on the throttle. FLick a throttle or flick the handlebars, it all ends up the same.

It does have a noisy motor and if not sync'd and with the correct ECM installed or upgraded can be a PIA.....BUT once it's dialed in it runs just like a 650 with a pair big nuts only with more noises.

I would ride a 650 - I am not mocking them.....well yes I am but it's all in good fun.....they are a very good machine, probably a more effortless purchase, especially since the 'professionals' at most suzuki dealers couldn't tune a rocking chair. 650's are ready out of the box for the most part.

Look for an '06 or above - if you go with the 1000. Later 05 have all the bugs fixed though....so that would work if you could tell when it was produced.

Height-wise what's an inch one way or the other....not enough to make a big difference.

i'm 6'4" and ride a wee. i think it's pretty comfy.

i'm a bit of a newb to the wonderful world of stroms, but it seems to me from my reading here and other places, other than the 1" difference in the stock seat height, the bikes are the same with the vee having more ass in the throttle dept and the bit of weight that goes with more motor. the wee's motor does seem to be better tuned from the factory, requiring less tinkering and aftermarket parts to run right.

i think the choice of wee or vee should be based more on riding style/types of miles than the physical size of the rider. the bikes are virtually identical in size other than the seat, which is easily remedied and lots of folks put aftermarket seats on anyway.

on the days i spend time on the superslab, i'd switch out my wee for a vee :) . on all other days, i'm quite content with the wee.

i do plan to put a taller/more comfy seat on the wee one day, but it's pretty far down the farkle list. i 'need' other stuff first  .

If you like the 650, get the 650. Im also 6'6" and ride the 650. The only thing I did was get the Gel seat that lift's you up about 1". Im also sure you can trade the 1000 seat for a 650 seat at the dealer or around here. Thats the 1" there. I say test ride both. They are two very different bikes. The 650 is lighter and more nimble, and the 1K has a lot more freeway grunt. Ride what fits your personality, but just remember that in the area of comfort and riding position, the only differeance between the two is the seat.

I'm 6'6" also, and I've never tried the wee. The Vee fits me great, in fact that was the reason I picked the Strom in the first place.

whether vee or wee, the strom is definitely a 'tall guy' kinda bike  .

i've been on a few different street bikes, and the strom seems to fit me best. i don't feel like i'm riding a 'toy'. i don't think you can go wrong with either.

Either one will work fine for your height (same frame, and you can easily trade seats). Buy whichever one you like more. Throw a set of raising links on the rear, a gel seat and maybe lower pegs and ride into the sunset :)

Remarkable restraint MS.

Jakeman, buy a 650. It'll do you just fine.

Hell I thought I was the one showing restraint on these Wee vs Vee threads. :D

Just pick your motor Jakeman, they both can be made to ride the same with just a seat change. You might have to add a little farkle money to the Vee to take care of the FI.

.....Must be civil.........

.....claims of flickability.....

...all the power returning riders want.....

ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH..................

The Wee's a gutless turd and the only reason people buy one is they are too cheap to get the 1K!

LOL! Just kidding! I like the Wee.

In my rear view mirror! :-D

Like MS said, they are both good bikes. If you need to make up for your manhood a little you need to be able to tell people you have a 1k. You get to play with it more, the motor that is. If you want to really go fast, you don't want either Strom.

Okay, well I guess this topic never really gets old...I thought I would get lambasted for posting the same damn question every other newbie posts!!

As I figured, the height differance is pretty minor as a consideration between the "Wee" and the "Vee", I'll be picking up a new Wee in the next week and if it really feel like I need more (height), I'll look into changing the seat or the rear links..

thanks for the feedback!

6'5"....250 lbs here....

I ride a Wee and love it. I test drove both vehicles and loved both. I think both have their place.

If I wanted a Strom that I could ride across the country, up to Alaska, etc...and spent most of my time on the black tops running 500-600 miles a day (especially on 70-80 mph highways) ....I would go with a 1000 in a heart beat.

But, I life in Colorado where the twisties run rampant!!!! And the 650 is just awesome on the twisties and the 650 is pretty good in the dirt. The 650 is just perfect for 200-400 mile days on the black top running 60-65 miles per hour or it is great running Forest Service Roads. (I had a 100 mile ride on I25, running 80 mph for the full duration....and I would have prefered the 1000. The 650 was ok, but at those speeds and heavy traffic....a heavier, more powerful bike would have been better.)

Bottom line, I purchased the 650 because it has plenty of power (enough to pull me and my wife up over the 12k passes in Colorado) and it loves to eat up the mountain roads, even with a full Givi case set.

Whinny?

Shep, "Whinny"? I've seen some pretty big people on the Venerable Wee, but never a horse.

Seriously, Jakeman to answer your initial question: I've a DL650, I'm 6', 200lb. I don't often ride two up or on Interstates, but when I do, I would like the extra 350 cc's of the one litre. I've ridden with some guys about your size and they didn't complain about the DL650's ergos, except about the stock seat, it simply sucks.

There are lots of ways to remedy the seat, a custom by Russel or Meyer might be the best for you.

Unless you're spending someone elses' money; money is always an issue. Insurance will be more, fuel will cost more, paying off traffic cops adds up and you'll have less range on the 1000 to out run them.

And for the most part, the stuff about the 650 vs. 1000's is all in good fun, but just mention a Harley.....................
