Hi,
I just picked up a 2010 dl1000 with 23 000 km. I have read that this is a very reliable bike. But as a new owner what are the thing I just look for or inspect?
What are the maintenance and the interval?
What should I never do with it?
Can I inspect the valve myself or should it be done by mechanic?
Do you use 87 or 91 octane ?
What are 5e common mechanic problem ( if there is any ) ?
What mod are a must?
It is my first bike and I am getting confident with it over time but I keep staying in low rom 3000-3500, the does not like it, it often studder and make weird noise, can i damage it overtime if I keep it in low rpm too often?
My high beam head light turn on sometime for no reason what should I look for?

Winter is coming here, I am looking to. 4 month with 6 feet of snow, so the bike will be in the garage and I will have plenty of time to take it appart, mod it, and do everything so It can be ready for next season.

There is a lot of information here and on VSRI that will help with maintenance and tracking down problems. Yes, you can do the work yourself if you have some tools and a place to work. 87 octane works just fine in them.

3000 rpm isn't really all that low. The bike will run fine there when in good tune. I suspect you are having some of the common fueling issues these are known for. Do some research on that. It is also possible you are having some clutch chudder, but at 23,000 kms they shouldn't be too bad. I have seen exceptions, see my signature to learn more about the clutches.

If you're talking 3,000-3,500 in 6th gear, then yes, that's too low. I've got a '12 and wouldn't use 3,500 with 6th gear unless on the flats with no wind or wind from behind. The bike yells at me if I'm in 6th at 3,000. That being said, I love 6th on the freeway. It becomes a beautiful gear.

thanks guys,
Another question, more of a general question regarding motocycle riding. Is it safe to ride in the cold? Close to 0 degree celcius, not below freezing but close to it. Someone told me my tire would not stay on the road if too cold. Any input on that?
As for the owner manual, where can i get a free pdf copy?

You need a repair/ maintenance manual. They are copyrighted and this site does not condone asking for illegal copies. So look to get a used manual here or on e-bay.

You need the manual to do the valve check. Whilst at it change the coolant since it's easier to work on the valves with the radiator removed.

Electrical gremlins: Whilst you have everything apart check all the accessible connectors for good contact (no burned or oxidized = brown/ black connectors). If all is clean, add dielectric grease to them and re-assemble.

Google here and read up on starter switch issues, headlight relay kit.

Not sure how the high beam comes on on it's own. Look for any aftermarket electrical additions, maybe some botched wiring job?

Check into a Booster Plug, or look into a power commander to make the engine run better at low rpm's. Stock, the engine is probably happier above 3500, especially with heavier throttle input.

Had a 2002, keep the RPM at 4,000 or above for best results. It doesn't like to be lugged around.
Welcome to the Strom.

Yes on the headlight relay, my 650 stranded me once due to heat issue on the starter switch due to this.

The 1000 can have fueling issues, mine would act up after slowing down at interstate off-ramps.

Utter nonsense. When I lived in a cold climate I rode in temps well below freezing with no performance issues. Last Christmas the wife and I rode in the north Georgia mountains in below freezing temps. That didn't last long because it was too damn cold for us. The Strom didn't care.
