Recently bought an '05 DL1000 with 25k miles on it. The person I bought it from didn't know too much about it. He bought it off a neighbor that was moving thinking he'd use it, but he had several other bikes and was more of a Harley guy. The bike only had about 200 more miles on the odometer than when he titled it several years ago. He said he just did regular maintenance and replaced the fuel pump. Bike runs and rides great, no issues that I've found yet. I plan to do the usual oil change, air filter and valve check. I've been lurking on the site for a bit now and have compiled a list of other things to check over and or monitor, but so far everything seems good. Even passed MD inspection with no problem. I'm not familiar with VStroms or Japanese bikes in general. I had some honda shadows like 20 years back, but then I got into dual sports and mostly rode Husqvarnas. Having a 98 Te610 and an 06TE510, both high strung and high maintenance. Buying this on a whim had me a bit nervous with 25k on the odor but it seems like these engines are pretty reliable.
The bike came with a few farkles already like side boxes, adjustable windshield, hand guards, corbin seat, riser extensions/ set backs, power commander, USB outlets, old tomtom rider2, crash bars, skid plate, rad and cooler guards, center stand and some other stuff I probably haven't noticed or forgot about. So it seemed like a fair price to me at $2800.
It also came with new stainless brake lines in a box and a spare used clutch basket. I've read about clutch chudder on these bikes, but haven't felt any on this one. Not sure what the spare basket was for, unless it's the old worn one but I'm not sure what to look for.
Anyway I've been searching and reading the forum for tons of info tips and just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks.

Welcome aboard. Looks like you done good. The Power Commander means the fuelling has probably already been sorted out. The clutch basket shows the PO knew the bike and was ready to replace it UNLESS he already DID replace it with a Werks basket and the photo is the original he removed, which would be a major win.

Date code on that basket appears to be January, 2005. Hard to be sure by the pic, but that would put it as being assembled a couple months after that typically. If your bike has a build date of March through say May, that would match as expected to be the ORIGINAL basket installed in your engine. Likely removed and replaced by a new OEM unit or a modified new OEM or a modified used basket sourced before teardown.

Date code on basket definitely appears to be Jan 05. Bike has a mfd of Feb 05. Is it worth opening it up and seeing what's in there next time I change the oil? Or should I just leave well enough alone. Bike shifts smooth and clutch feels good, so nothing concerning, just more curiosity than anything.

Welcome in @80Grady! Nice bike - I just picked up my first Strom a couple weeks ago too, and I've been really liking it.

Looks like you got a good bike with a good setup there. I would have to agree with @realshelby 's take on the clutch basket (from my limited knowledge and recent research) - great news.

As I'm sure you'll find as you research, 25,000 miles is nothing to be concerned about for these bikes (this one's at 437,000 miles!). I think you've done great for $2800. Enjoy!

A basket with a January casting date....going into a February bike build is quicker than average turn around. But the Vee was selling pretty well back then and parts were not sitting around too long. Suzuki itself does not actually build the clutch baskets. FCC in Japan builds them to Suzuki spec. They also build a LOT of Japanese clutch baskets across different brands.
