I picked up a TW200 today for trips to the Pine Barrens and other off-road trips. It will also be a great learner bike for my wife, and a fun commuter I can keep right at home (my VStrom is a kept a few miles away at a garage).

I've loved these ever since a pal had one about 16 years ago. I've been looking at trading some atv's for one. Congrats!

You'll love the bike. It's what got me back into riding after 25 years of being off motorcycles. I put 10,000 miles on mine in just 4 years and did tons of mods to it:




including ATV tire, high front fender, custom seat....etc. Make sure you spend time over on here:

Nice bike

What made you choose that model and what other models did you consider? The reason I ask is because I too have been considering picking up a second motorcycle that would be easier to handle off road and also be a good starter bike for my wife to learn on.

I picked up a used '09 CRF230L for similar reasons and love it. It and the TW200 are very similar in power, weight, seat height, etc. and a great compliment to the Strom when you want to throw around a bike 200 lbs lighter.

John: I'll take a shot at answering why I went with the TW200. I was looking for something easy to ride, low seat height, excellent MPG and fun. I didn't want fuel injection or any type of radiator as I wanted it to be ultra-reliable out in the middle of no where. Was actually really considering the Honda Trail 90 until I discovered the TW200 and read some articles. The TW200 had it all. It was way more fun on the pavement than I expected and a blast exploring trails. I re-jetted and modified the air box and muffler looking for a little more performance. Raised the fender because the low fender packed with mud. Put 10,000 awesome miles on it and it never let me down. TW's are just fun, fun, fun little bikes and I'll probably have another one in my future when I reach the age I need to really slow down, or my Grandson is ready to move up from the CT50 I plan on buying him.:thumbup:

That said, if I was looking again and had the wife in mind I might strongly consider the Yamaha XT225 instead of the TW200. Their motors are almost identical. The reason for that primarily has to do with suspension and me now being a more aggressive rider. The TW200 with the very heavy back tire and rim is awesome up to about a medium aggressive trail. After that the back shock just can't keep up with the un-sprung weight. You can just forget it if you get into whoops.
The XT has much more availability of modifying the suspension and options for tires. Big plus the Xt225's have a 6 speed tranny the TW200 and newer XT250's have 5 speed.

The TW has 8/10 of an inch lower set height so that might be a factor.

TW200 31.1
XT225 31.9
DR350 36 (nose bleed time)

For a new rider, or an older (age) rider wanting to explore the back country at a comfortable leisurely pace the TW wins. For someone wanting an lightweight woods bike they can modify to make a better woods bike yet be ultra reliable (no KTM's) and super on fuel, the XT is a stronger consideration.

But if seat height is not an issue and someone is looking for a great licensed dirt bike - the DR350 I had was so much fun and way better than either of the Yamaha's. Only reason I sold it was once I got the Wee, the DR just sat un-ridden. But there are days I miss both the TW and the DR.



Funny but just writing this novel (sorry for the length) I'm actually missing the TW more. It always put a huge smile on my face.......well, except the two times I had to jump on the interstate for a few miles.

Every bike is a compromise somewhere. That's why owning different ones at different times isn't such a bad thing!

this is the only thing that this bike is excellent for. in fact outstanding.:thumbup:



and a fun commuter I can keep right at home
unless your commute is on dirt roads and you drive below 45 MPH it will SUCK as a commuter.

once you give up trying to commute on the bike, drop one tooth on the countershaft sprocket and it will be much more fun on a trail, and even better at what it excels at.

There were a few reasons:

The height of the TW's seat was a big factor over the XT250. The XT was just a bit too tall for the wife to learn on.

The TW has a great reputation in the in the loose sugar sand that makes up the Pine Barrens.

Simple bomb proof reliable design.

It will make a great pit bike for Mid Ohio!

I commuted to work the other day. Most of my route is 40mph or lower with only one short stretch of 50mph.

The bike did great with the only issue being crossing the Washington's Crossing bridge which is a grated steel span.

The VStrom does not move at all on the bridge........... The TW was ALL over the place! Very sketchy!

Like riding on ice. I remember riding with tj on his kaw kz1000 back in the day, and we would ride into the city, Chicago, and riding under the post office building it's grated. VERY nerve racking for me. He would just go with it, lol

Very neat bike.

Find the post with the 70+ year old guy that takes a trip on a TW200 with a trailer on a 4000mile trip and loved every moment. Last I heard he had started planning another one.
After reading it I have been looking to pick one up. Around here they hold there value very well.

I agree with some of the sentiment here. I had one long enough to realize it was going to get me killed as a round town commuter. Too slow and way too low geared to be able to get away from people. If they had put the 350 engine in it I would still have it. Off-road in an arroyo NOTHING can touch it! NOTHING! Just don't be in a hurry and you will be fine...
