I am a soon-to-be Strom newb. I have been dreaming of V-Stroms for years, been doing loads of research since then. Now that I am ready to get one (finally!) I am at a crossroads. I'm currently looking at two DL650s. One used, one new. (I like Orange and Blue equally)

The Used one is an orange 2012 model (ABS), 8,000 miles, original owner, in great shape. No huge mods, except the crashbars and new windscreen. Looked like it was babied. The people at the dealer said it was a trade in by a guy that commuted on it daily and wanted to upgrade to a Triumph. Only thing I noticed was that it has been at the dealer for 4 months sitting inside and dusty, and that the crashbar on the right side had been cracked. No dents or scratches on the bar, except for the crack. Looked like they heated it up and the metal just snapped. Only weird thing about the bike that may or may not be a big deal. Aside from that, the fairing, frame, pegs, exhaust, engine, back rack, wheels, chain, were spotless.

Price: $5999 ($6500 otd)

The New one is a blue 2013 model, 0 miles and I am pretty sure I will be eligible for Suzuki's Deal Days 0% APR for 2013 models.

Price: $7745( ~$8400 otd)

Obviously, it'd be great to have a new one, but given the reliability of these bikes, would the 2012 be a better option since it's already broken in and $2,000 cheaper? (It'd be nice to use that money for a skid plate, some bags and riding gear)

Or would a brand new bike (at 0%APR, if I qualify) with a 12 month warranty be worth the extra 2 grand?

(About the crash bar on the used one, I forget the name, but they were made in Germany, black and there was a weird reddish discoloration where it was cracked. The crack was on the right bar, where a cross bar goes in front of the radiator to connect the left and right bars)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Used bike. Get the real story of the cracked bar, and have them provide a new one. Make sure no damage happened to the bike when the bar was cracked. Reddish color...red rust dust? That would be from a defective weld that partially cracked, then the parts rubbed together until it broke completely. If not bent, a good welder could reweld it if you take it off the bike. Be sure the welder bolts it to a "target" to prevent heat distortion when it cools. Is the brand SW-Motech?

Dicker hard for a better price. 4 months on the floor this time of year...they need to move it. They could offer you something, such as a set of new tires, and tires better that the mediocre Trailwings.

Or consider doing a fly and ride - or trailer pick up - and find a leftover 2012 Adventure for the price of used. Over the last couple of months many have been sold for under $7K OTD plus tax.

PTRider, yeah, there was some reddish rust on the bar. I'll talk to them tomorrow and see if they will either come down on the price, or see if they can put a new set of tires on and weld or replace the cracked bar. I think they are anxious to get it out of there, so I shouldn't have too hard a time haggling them down. I'd be happy with them knocking the price down $500 if they don't want to put some new tires on it.

BTW, what tires would be best for a 80%road, 20% dirt/trail rider?

Still trying to haggle down on the price on that 2012 DL 650. I took a look at the tires and since the bike has been sitting for 4 months now I noticed that the front tire specially has some cracking in between the treads in look like it was dry rotting a little bit. When I saw that I said I'd take the bike for OTD if they put on a new set of tires. Since they wouldn't go down on the price they just offered a few "options". They tried to offer me a wheel and tire three-year coverage plan for an extra $388. I'm just going to play the waiting game with them since they already ran a credit check they know I'm serious and that I'm driving a hard bargain. 95 percent sure that I want this bike but I don't want have to drop 250 bucks on tires and potentially other maintenance getting the bike back in running order since its been sitting for so long. Aside from tires, what else should I look out for from a stagnating WeeStrom?

Wow... I'd go somewhere else...

I'd tell them 6k OTD AND new tires. Give them your number and tell them to call you if they change there mind. If you have not bought elsewhere you will still deal with him.

Take a look at my pics in my album. The bike is $5990, but tax, fees, etc. is $6580 OTD. Bike was babied (8,000 miles). Hard as hell to find a late model, pre-owned Vstrom in KY and I have been wanting one for years now.

Thought about financing a new one, but would feel dumb spending an extra $2000 on a bike that can run 100k+ miles

I think 6k OTD and new tires is a little ambitious. Blue Book and NADA (2012 Suzuki DL650AL2 V-Strom Standard Equipment, 2012 Suzuki DL650AL2 V-Strom Price & Specs | NADAguides) suggest they are already taking a hit on the bike at this point.

I'll see if I can get some new tires thrown in and/or a price decrease. I am dying to get back to riding, but I also don't want a bike with iffy tires when it starts to warm up (i.e. not snowy and icy outside)

I'd be THRILLED to get it for $6000 OTD with new rubber, but I don't know if they are willing to take more of a hit to sell the bike.

I wouldn't mind driving out a few hours to get a bike, but most good deals I've seen are out in California. Almost went down to Tennessee for a 2006 VStrom, but they got rid of it before I had a chance to get down there.

If it cost me $500+ to fly out that far, then pay gas to ride it back (as cool as that would be) I'd be looking $600-700 to look at a bike that may or may not be in good shape.

I think they will come down or at least give me new tires if I drive a harder bargain and wait a few more days. Bike's been there for 4 months, so I doubt it's going anywhere soon... :/

Strom newbie, bought mine used form a dealer on Long Island, NY last year. High miles but excellent shape/no issues. Thought about private sale but being new I didn't want to mess with that/not really being sure what problem signs to look for.

Did they wind up doing any better on the price for you?

I'd just be hesitant given the appeal of a new bike. You can do a lot of damage in 8k miles and who knows if it actually was babied or not... they always tell you that it was. To me knowing the service history, knowing that it was broken in properly and just knowing it's brand new would be worth the $2,000 compared to a bike that already has a few issues.

Did you get the bike? Good luck either way... I would have bought used too no problem... I got a brand new one with 0% financing, so free money. That was the boy reason I bought new. Congrats either way!

They are getting antsy, but I won't buy anything without a test ride. It is super clean, and aside from hearing it run and riding it, I can't say how the engine and transmission are. I REALLY want a Vstrom, but I don't want a lemon either

Lexington Motorsports had a new 14 650 for $8995. Best bang for the buck on any new bike they had in the store IMO. ABS, suspension, best engine out their--I didn't see anything new any brand that was a better value for what you get. That being said a leftover 13 is even cheaper and you get to break it in yourself. I have had way more used than new but I like being able to be the first owner. Of course I would check with Lees Inc in Harrodsburg before I bought a new one anywhere else.

I think I might be in the minority, but I prefer buying new bikes. It is important for me to know the history of the bike from mile 1 (especially since I plan on keeping my Strom for a looonnnnggg time). With the great financing from Suzuki/ Sheffield, your monthly payment will be about as low as a used bike loan (if you aren't paying cash). It is true that you won't get all the farkles, but you will get the chance to make the bike exactly what you want, rather than inheriting someone else's idea of a great bike. Just my 2 cents (and it may not be worth that much).

But as a buddy of mine says, "One bike is better than no bike." So either way you go is great!

I don't like having monthly payments. When I was 19 and going through college I racked up a bunch of debt and learned my lesson the hard way. 14 years later and I only go in debt for large item purchases such as house, car, etc.

When it came time to buy my second bike, I had about $4500 cash to spend. I debated on using it as a deposit on a new bike. I'd love a new bike! to know the entire history, to take it from 0-100,000 miles, to really make the bike mine and only mine... kind of like a woman LOL.

However I wound up going with one that had been around a few times lol, bought a used one for $4200 with 38,000km on it. Over the winter I have put another $2,000 in farkles onto the bike.

I have no monthly payments so I can afford to do lots of weekend/day trips on the bike. I have a limited income (typical middle class family) and I didn't want to have a monthly payment take away from the ride. My wife's only going to let so much money go towards my hobby.

So like others have said go with what you can really afford. You don't want a nice shiny new bike and not be able to afford to go on a trip for a week!

Having said that, I'd like to get another 3-4 years out of this bike and at that point I think I'll go with a new bike next time. I won't have a car loan then to deal with either. It really is a personal decision... if it makes no difference to your finances to spend another 2k then go for the new one! I likely would go new over a low mileage one year old bike, if I go used I go 5 years old or so.
