OK so how would you feel about this? My motor has done 2500km[1660m] and has a holed sump. Under insurance this will be stripped down, new crankcases with new bearings pressed in where appropriate, new rings, all new gaskets,'o' rings etc put back together in bike with new brake pads and new rear tyre. You don't want to know how much this all costs, plus the availability problem! What would you want? New motor?[ My preferred option, not available] Or new bike? Should we have a poll?:D

How about a used motor? Unless you have absolutely unshakable confidence in the tech doing the work, a VERY low mileage used one would be my preference. If not, I'd go for a new (or used) bike. Part yours out or fix it on your own time.

Check out the cost of a new motor, then point out to the insurance assessor how much labour and time off the road will be saved. Along with the fact that they may be able to sell the damaged motor to a wrecker.

Remember though, that insurance companies are out to make a profit, not friends.

At the mo I have a friend who is an insurance investigator[lucky me!] She is making it look like a write off situation. End result? I'll have a brand new bike that will cost me $600 and new ins. Failing that, I have to go with the Ins Co policy and recommendation. New motor is unavailable, that would have been 1st choice for me. I would have welded and been back on the road by now but it's ins so have to be very careful. I'll be rapt if they replace tho. The bike has a salvage value of $8-12,000NZ apparently. I could buy it back and fix it! Ha ha.:D

I'd go for the write off, take the money and get a new bike. A rebuild of that magnitude will only lead to heartache. Nothing worse than watching your pride and joy go under the knife only to immerge retarded.

another big "Amen" to that. At least get a salvage bike replacement motor that's never been apart. Anyone else follow the saga of poor Stormy a few yrs back? Same deal, and his motor was never completely right after the rebuild. Remember, you're going from a dedicated factory facility with experienced people, to a comparatively poorly equipped shop with little or no formal quality control, run by underpaid staff who never saw the inside of one of these before. Stick to your guns.

PS any clue WHY you got a hole in your sump?

I ran over something on the road that pinged up and crunched a hole in the casings. My insuranse is fully comp and covers me for accidental damage. Keen as i am to get a new bike, ultimately it is up to the insurance assessor! I have had my say and a friend who is an insurance investigator helped me enormously. But I would happily have had my bike back, I was just getting into it, it was just run in, going smoother every day etc. But once they strip them down...........

Hurrah! They are replacing my bike, I will get my new one 15th Jan. They will let me swap over my farkled bits,[turn lamp reflectors, madatad bracket,top box mount etc] and then begin the run in procedure all over again. I told them I don't care what colour it is, so apparently I'm getting a pink one!:mrgreen:

Well, that is good news. Every so often insureance pays off. Good for you. I just ordered my Pat Walsh skidplate so this never happens to my 1K.

:D Balazs! Yep. Skid plate city....here we come! My local bike shop bought the write off and will fix and re-sell. It would be a good bike if all they do is weld the hole over! I will have some unique farkles to show you mid Feb.;)

Congrats on the out come. This sounds like the best of a bad situation.
