Hey everyone, just found the boards here thanks to one of your members, WIsixfitty, and just wanted to give a brief introduction and ask a couple quick questions :D

I've had my motorcycle for about 2 years now, last time I rode (and the only time) was 2 years ago in the MSF beginner's training course.

Since i'm pretty rusty, I plan on taking the riding part of the course again until I feel comfortable (especially with the turning).

I come from the subaru community, with a 5MT wrx. In Glendale, CA


Just a quick noob question..
When turning on a bike (at speeds where you're required to lean) I was told that you should lift the handle on the direction you're going and lean in that direction. So if I wanted to go left, I would tilt the handle right and lean left. Right?

Also...
Do you guys know any good shops that carry accessories in my area? I tried searching on google but I really didn't know where to start and didn't come across much..

While push left to go left is the way it works, that's not something for your brain to handle. Take the course again or at least find a riding buddy to get you to an empty parking lot to practice. With the MSF course your only experience and that being two years old, you need more practice in a safer environment.

Counter-Steering:
Countersteering is a method of causing the bike to lean into a turn, and is initiated by pressing on the handgrip in the direction of the turn. The result is to steer the wheels out from directly under the bike toward the outside of the turn, rotating the bike around its center of gravity, and leaning it into the turn.

No. Left. :D Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'm not too far ahead of you, riding wise. As far as counter steering goes, we were taught "Press left, lean left, go left. Press right, lean right, go right." Since the "press" causes the "lean," you could really shorten it to "Press left, go left. Press right, go right." It's a lot easier to do than to think about, IMHO.

Are you a pilot, as your user name implies?

I second the advice of others: ease back into it.

the whole countersteering thing is counter-intuitive but it's VERY real. start slow and consciously push left, push right and feel how the bike reacts as you go through turns. when i first got my wee a year and a half ago i was pretty green too. i'd ridden a bike sparingly before (10yrs prior without knowing what the heck i was doing) and had taken the MSF recently, but parking lot drills just don't do it. i actually had the pucker factor kick in a couple times early as i thought i was going to take a turn wide. i started consciously thinking push right, push left, and now it's become natural and reflex and automatic. amazing difference. after 8500mi, running twisties is a whole new experience understanding how the machine works. good luck.

Im also from the subaru community (nasioc I presume). I wouldnt sweat the push left go left countersteering stuff. Your brain doesnt really think about it on that level. You've been doing it since your childhood BMX days. The MSF course is good practice. So is an empty parking lot and a cheap bike. Just go slow and practice your braking techniques. Remember too much front brake on low traction surface = bad. Too much rear brake on low traction surface = not good but survivable. So when in doubt just apply more rear brake if you feel it lock up just let off of it. Do not let the front lock.

I too am still a noob motorcyclist. The countersteering thing sounds more complicated than it really is. If you want, just take a regular bicycle and get up some speed and try it that way, just press forward on one side or the other and see how it reacts (you will go in the direction you push). I first did it on a bicycle and the motorcycle was exactly the same and now feels completely natural. Just don't push too hard :wink:
