I have a DL1000 year 2004. When I let out on the clutch rather aggressively with gas the bike chatters. It feels like a chain slipping over the sprocket but all that is fine. I thought it might be the clutches but the dealer said he isn't sure and can't tell without replacing all of the disks.
It is worse when the bike starts out for the first time also.

larrry, do a site search on "Chudder"... yes, I know it's not a word, so it's almost impossible for someone who hasn't owned a Strom to know to search on it... ;)

Us strommers can be a bit "odd" from time to time... heh... Chudder = Chatter + Shudder. Exactly what you are feeling, right? :p

It's a very well-documented clutch basket issue on the 02-04 DL1000's. It drives some people crazy. Some barely notice it. Some are able to get their dealer to acknowledge something is wrong. Some dealers look you right in the eye and say "All big-twins do that".

If you have a dealer that is willing to investigate it, you will find all the information you need, including which basket to replace your faulty one with, on this site. Hopefully he will either replace it under warranty or at least discount the labor.

Oh, and by the way, it's nothing that's going to suddenly blow up your bike. IT SOUNDS like it is, but that's really all it is.. just a sound and shudder at 3000-3500 rpms. I haven't gotten mine done yet, but I just let the clutch out real slow and gradually and don't release it fully until I hit 4k. You can drive around it until you get it fixed, if you choose to do so.

cool. I lived in Conejo Valley for 3 yrs back in the late 80's. Long before I became a rider, or I might not have left!

thanks for the replys, I came to the conclusion that it wasen't going to blow up when I drove it from Wilmington NC to Simi Calif. in 4 1/2 days and it was still running. I just put DOT Knobbys on this bike and am taking it to Cancun this summer.

Your comment about the agressive take offs brought to my mind that the cush drive rubbers in the rear sprocket maybe worn. If they are they will indicate it in similar symptons to a worn chain or clutch grabbing and releasing, a feeling of surging or slipping and excessive noise from the drive train.

A cheap fix or test is to remove the rear wheel and with a used inner tube is to trim pieces of the tube to fit around each piece of the cush rubbers and replace the sprocket and ride. The sprocket should fit tightly with no slop found when twisting by hand. If the feeling is diminished or gone and noise is eliminated you found the problem. This fix is good for several thousand miles but a new set of cush rubbers is not expensive, under $30 from Ron Ayers. Good luck with it.

Hey Larry. Glad to see you made it to a forum. We met on a WOW ride a few months back. You demonstrated the aggressive take off, but I don't think you were able to duplicate the symptom at that time. Yeah, aggressive take off all right! Just short of a wheelie or BURN-OUT!
