I am Richard Collier, Dixie722 on forum. 71 years old, been riding for 58 of them .. I currently do not have a bike, but trying to buy a v strom locally. I have ridden the 650 and liked it a lot. , and love the way the the 1000 looks. I intend to go off road every now and then. I have two 1000 s that I am looking at now, but too far away to test ride. Our local dealer does not have any in stock.Decisions Decisions. This is a really interesting forum. glad you guys are out there.

Hi Richard,
What's your location? Are you willing to ship? Etc Etc Etc

BTW - Welcome!!!
I am in Beaumont Texas ..90 miles from Houston . and willing to ship, but shipping prices right now are way high.. I'm so glad to find this forum.
Really nice. But too much for me. I need an older one, around 4500 if possible.
If you get an older one be sure it has all the systemic issues addressed. Otherwise, it may be cheaper to buy a newer one. Like a fully loaded 2014 DL1000 for $6,000.

yours?
I am looking to contact someone who posted a 2012 650 in HOuston.. user name PP186515. I cant reply to his post, seems like I dont have enough replys or time on the forum. How do I contact him? Its probably gone by now anyway..
Yes, mine's for sale, but it is probably too far away from you.

There are systemic issues with the Gen 1 DL1000 that need to be considered. They aren't necessarily deal breakers, just things that need to be considered in the pricing. Clutch basket, rear wheel spacer, stator, etc. There is a thread in that 2002 to 2012 DL1000 subforum that talks about them.

The Gen 1 650 is generally considered to be better sorted out. I had a 2005 DL650 and it was nothing but reliable. Personally, I would go for one that ABS though.
Thanks Rich. . I was not aware of the issues, good to know. The excitement of buying gets in the way of rational thinking. I am experienced in riding and wrenching but would rather not have to If possible. The guys I will be riding with are on dedicated dirt bikes, street legal. No v stroms. So I will be at a disadvantage, and heavier.
Thank you I have reached out to two of them , we will see what happens. Where are you?

Rich.. at least send some pictures and description. I might as well torture myself.
I am considering letting my 2008 Strom 650 go for a 2017+ 650. I have owned since Jan. 2015 and it has been a very good bike. Purchased with 20,000 miles, currently 63,000. runs great. Many good extras including Sargent seat, Happy Trails panniers(largest available at 43 liters each) , Suzuki centerstand, heated grips (Suzuki OEM), SW Motech crashbars and skid plate, Givi and MadStad adjustable windshield. Well maintained and just fully serviced (oil, filter, air filter, sparkplugs). Wearing sport touring tires. Adventuretech 1-1/8" lowering link and stock unit. Soupy's adjustable kickstand, Adventuretech footpeg lowering kit, auxiliary light bar and lights. 12v socket on fairing.

Located in west Georgia on I-20. Not actively trying to sell, but starting to think about it.
