Picked up new DL650 Friday and not sure if all DL650's are like this but on soft acceleration I get a knocking noise increasing in frequency with RPM and mainly in 2nd and 3rd gear, upshifting and downshifting. Engine runs smooth and strong, noise started about 60KM after picking the bike up.

Switched to higher octane gas and didn't make any difference. Temperature normal, acceleration very good after 450KM but still a little noisy re. the knocking. Like something hitting the engine case... which mechanic assured me it wasn't and it goes away.

I have very limited knowledge re. this engine/transmission/fuel injection and just wondered if any body else has experienced this same thing. Noise is not noticeable while crusing.

Any input appreciated.

They're normally silky smooth....take it back to the dealer cos they don't all sound like that!
Mine's older than that and all I can say is WHAT HE SAID (pointing to Pete's post).

C'mon guys, be honest now, there are quite a few guys that hear more noises than others do. There are alot of owners, including myself, that mention knocky noises at idle and even at light acceleration. A better question would be "Has anybody had an engine failure because of this sound on the 650?" And the answer would be "None." I noticed this same sound the day I rode mine home, 15,000 miles ago. The bike runs like a Swiss watch. The 650 uses a solid primary gear unlike the split gear on the 1000 and it's actually much more likely that someone would hear the backlash noises with the primitive solid gear. My 650 has really grown on me, kinda reminds me of the small army of old VW Beetles I used to own, all sorts of funny little clicking, ticking, knocky sounds that take many miles to get used to. There's all sorts of talk over on the V-Strom Forum from new owners seeking assurance that their 650's aren't going to explode on them. :lol:

trailbuster30 that is my concern. I just traded my 2003 KLR650 in with 27,000KM and never heard that sort of knock or rattle. Vibration yes (but manageable), knock no.

I'm am going to drop the oil within the next day or so and will check to see if there is anything unusual in the filter etc. ... other than the usual debris.

There are lot of threads re. DL1000 Idle Knock which is not the same as I am experiencing which is running knock that goes away as speed increases. While over at the dealership this guy starts up his fire engine red racing Ducatti and it sounded like the centrifical clutch rattling on a go-cart... what a racket. Went away though as soon as he pulled away.

As mentioned seems most noticeable during soft acceleration 2nd and 3rd. (up or down shifting) I did note that while I am sitting at idle in first and pressing down gear lever further gives a tick tick tick noise RPM based. When checking the grear shift lever I note there is an round knurled adjustment disk mid point on the link connecting the lever. Any idea what the adjustment would be? Could this also effect gear mating thoughout higher shifts?

Mine is a knock while running not idling.

TomG, I no longer have the bike. As it was new I swapped it for an alternative DL650.

Vnice, Where in the world is the dealer that you bought your DL650 from that would swap yours for another bike? That's what I call service! I also traded a KLR 650 for my DL 650 and, yes, the noises are there, gear whine, chain whine and knocky sounds. Don't be surprised if on your new 650 the noises return. My dealer replaced the entire clutch assembly on my DL to try and eliminate the idle knock and, yes, the running knock that you mentioned. After I got the bike back the noises were gone, but guess what, they came back after a few hundred miles. If I didn't know better I'd say the temper in the clutch springs went away a bit and the backlash returns, ergo, the noise returns. Another noise you may notice sooner or later is the cam chain tensioner as it moves out against the cam chain, it comes and goes. It is a clicking sound at low speed as you pull away from a stop. If you're very sensitive to this stuff and have good hearing I can almost guarantee that sooner or later you will experience some of these sounds, they are normal for this type of engine and I'll also bet this is one of the longest-lived bikes you will ever own.
