I want to share my experiences and impresions so far about my 2005 black DL1000. Bought the bike off the showroom floor in December 2004. The bike misfired a lot in the 3K RPM range. Called the shop's service manager and he said that's normal and I should just keep the RPM higher!

Based on what I read on these web sites, I guess it can be normal, but it should not be so. I tried different octane fuel, set the throttle cable slack, then bought a manometer and synchronzed the throttle bodies. None of these had any real effect. Then after about 500 miles I installed a Powercommander III with stock mapping and still saw no improvement UNTIL I adjusted the PC III to make the mixture richer, especially in the low and mid RPM ranges. After that, the engine runs perfect at all RPMs. A BIG THANKS to those who previously posted their recommendation of the Powercommander!

With that behind me, I must say that this bike is a WONDERFUL riding experience. My most recent bikes were a 1200 Bandit and a Yamaha FZ1. Those bikes were very good, but the Strom feels so much lighter and more nimble. I now have about 1200 miles on the Strom and have been able to crank open the throttle a few times, at least in the lower gears. The v-twin is really different than the in-line fours that I was accustomed to. Huge amounts of torque, but also quick revving. More power than I can use, really. I had considered buying the 650 due to its lighter weight and lower cost, but because I often ride two-up with my wife, I opted for the 1000. Despite the quiet exhaust, the engine has a feel and sound that really makes you feel connected and integral to the bike. And it has a very strong engine deceleration when you let off the throttle, which is great for approaching sharp turns.

I must say that I had unreaslistic expectations about the Strom's off-road abilities. It works great on smooth the smooth gravel roads that make most street bikes squirm, but on rough dirt roads or soft sand you begin to find the Strom's limitations. And actual off-road trails are torture for the Strom and rider.

I added the Mo-Tech centerstand, mainly for chain servicing.

Overall, IMHO the DL1000 is a really comfortable, nimble, powerful street bike, with the capibility to ride confidently on almost any road. Despite having to add about $500 for the PC III and centerstand to finish the bike, it still cost less than $9K making it an exceptional value.

My new '04 behaves just like you mentioned, and I'm sure I'll have to purchase the Power Commander or Ivan's fix as you did. I'm gonna try to hold out till my warranty's up, just in case (if I can tolerate it). What happened with your mileage after the install?

My previous was also an FZ1, and while I found IT lighter and nimbler, there's no doubt that the Strom does better off the asphalt. Like you, and now I, have noticed, it's no trail bike but doesn't mind a decent dirt road. What's weird to me is that even though I find the Strom bulkier, I imagine due to its height and length excess over the FZ1, it's only a few pounds heavier dry than the Yamaha!
