Need 2013 DL650A replacement key, ASAP.

4204 Views 28 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  backatter
I am the original owner of a 2013 DL650A and I live in the same town I purchased the bike. The primary key snapped off in the cylinder of my "frozen" gas cap. I cannot put my hands on my original title or my backup key, at the moment (if ever) but, as I said, I am the original owner who purchased the bike new, in Austin, and that dealership is still in business, today, in 2022. I have redundant state and federal (photo) ID's.
I am seriously broke and I have 72 hours to move the bike or have it impounded. What are my options? I am hoping to go to the dealership and present my VIN# and Valid IDs or, if possible, to find the cylinder# and order, based upon that.
Thank you, very much, for your assistance. I really need your help.

No way to pull the broken part of the key out of the lock? Once you have the parts, any locksmith can make a key. It's not chipped. If you search this forum, you'll be able to dig up the part number for a replacement key. The locksmith will have to shave the corners off the tab so that it will fit in the lock well.
Here, I did the research for you. It's an ilco X241 and heres the shape you need to shave it into.

Thank you, very much, for your thoughtful and timely response. .. I am sorry that I was not clear. The original cap is long gone (now replaced with a stopper and a rag}.
I do not possess any part of any key, as the backup key was "lost" in my last move. Any other ideas? .. Anyone?
Sorry, you're screwed unless you can find some way to move the bike.

3 strong guys and a pickup truck. One on each side at the front and one at the rear. Lift the front wheel into the truck. Then switch to two guys at the rear and one up in truck at the front.
A good locksmith can make a key for you without the original. A friend in my club lost the keys to her Honda CBR a couple of years ago. Honda wanted hundreds of dollars to replace the locks on the bike, a local locksmith came to her house, and made her two keys for less than $100 Canadian. Don't know what a locksmith charges in your neck of the woods, but that would be my first call.

Went to 6+ locksmiths trying to make a copy when got my bike.
They are good with house door locks and somewhat ok with car keys. Seeing my key resulted in blank faces (no pun intended). As if motorcycle was invented yesterday.
Nobody had such blanks and most wont make a copy if I brought my own blank.
If there is a manner of removing the seat, you can reach the seat lock by removering the rear fender. A good lock smith should be able to cut a key to match those tumblers.

Steering lock ...

That would work ... I have a friend with a pickup and a flatbed trailer is "affordable" but, my helper and I are frail (old) and you know how much a DL650-ADV weighs. If it was not for the steering lock, we could have rolled it up the ramp. As it is? Need a hoist or the Rotary Club. This sickens me. No feasible way forward, as yet and no joy in sight. Hmmmmm.
THANKS, BTW

So far, one mobile locksmith said, the minimum would be $100 and "it goes up from there". ...
So, I asked if it would cost me to "back out of " (or, refuse) the quote? ..
He said, $20 if I balk. I have zero income. My food assistance does not even cover toilet tissue, so, Unless I can "git-'er-dun" for $100, yeah ... I have to hock my Stratocaster for "a song". ... I may puke.
Thanks for the insight. I appreciate any thoughts, and your time.

No ... I am the original owner and I can apply for a replacement title .. I just do not have any personal transport and the place where you get the duplicates is way north of here and, if it is on the Metro Bus route, then, it is an obscure feeder route. .. Like I said, to be crystal clear, the chain of custody is local and rock-solid .. I have redundant state and federal IDs, and supporting docs. Time is short and my resources are very limited. Sucks to be me but, I would not choose to be anyone else .. Go figger.
If it was not for the steering lock, we could have rolled it up the ramp.
Saw a tow truck driver load a bike with locked forks by liberally lubing the ramp with dish soap, worked like a charm.
Don’t know how much that would help when you factor in the whole frail/ old thing though.

Good Luck brother.
This post reads like a shaggy dog story.

How about a skate board under the front wheel Tie a rope around the wheel and skate board so the bike stays on the skate board.
KEYS: 2022 Vstrom 650XTA

I went to a local locksmith about a week or so ago for some extra keys. Short story - I got my keys and they work fine. Total bill was $27.

I needed 2 ignition keys ($20) and 2 small keys ($7) for the aluminum luggage.

Luggage keys: Short story - with some file work and patience manipulating 2 very close blanks, they were done and were $7 of the $27.

Ignition keys: they didn't have any blanks that matched my ignition so the lady set up an order for them (OEM Suzuki keys). She said it would take a couple of three days. I didn;t really need the nice, fancy Suzuki keys, but before I could ask her how much, her brother (another locksmith) came in and said "Oh. I might have 2 Suzuki blanks in the truck to match them." He did but, as has been mentioned many times in this thread I'm sure, the large head of the blank was preventing a full insertion into the lock. So, with my permission, he ground away part of the head on each side, then cut and filed the keys and we were done. $10 a piece for the ignition blanks.

These keys are just for spares and maybe a hide-a-key setup when I've finished deciding where and how. I do believe you (or a locksmith) can order the fancy-shaped Suzuki keys for most any year,

Harbor Freight has those little roll around things for under $20. Stick one under the wheel and away you go.

Can you describe it a little more? Also, I don;t quite understand sticking it under the wheel. Are you talking about under the fender?(?)
Thanks
Your very last resort could be to drill out the ignition to get the steering lock unlocked. Then hotwire the bike and worry about a new ignition and keysets later.
