I change gears by what feels right, but it would be nice to know what gear I am really in all the time - I noticed I keep trying to shift to seventh, and I like to make turns knowing I'm in second. So I bought a gear indicator from Cal-Sportbike for $150 http://www.calsportbike.com/gipro-ds/. Installation on a Vstrom is brainless - it plugs into a service connector on the right side of the bike. I like it much more than I thought I would. Also the people at Cal-Sportbike are very nice to work with when I had questions. I tried it attached to my brake reservoir, but like it better on the tach. It comes in different colors - red seems to look the best to me.

I always wanted one of these but $150 is a bit much for what you get. Looks great in that spot and I am sure it's worth it.

That looks very cool. So did you just run it under the gas tank to get to the plug under the seat? Also how did you stick it to the tach?

I decided to add one a while ago and so far I love it. It is kinda expensive but no regrets.
