I recently ordered the lifetime map updates from Garmin for my trusty 2720, then found the new maps wouldn't load, nor would Garmin Express talk to the 2720.

On inquiry Garmin says:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

On Wednesday, May 14th, 2014, Garmin released a statement regarding Garmin mode devices (such as the Streetpilot 2720):

"After years of offering devices like yours with mapping data up to 4 times a year, I am sorry to inform you that your device has reached its end of life due to both hardware limitation of the device and improvements in mapping technology."

The reason this happened is because the Steetpilot can only handle files of up to 2 GB in size at a time, and the map update has exceeded that size in even the smallest region. We cannot perform a map update on your device because the device cannot handle the size of the file given the limitations of the hardware.

If you have purchased a Lifetime Map Update in the last year and you have not activated more than one map, we can offer you a full credit.

If you are interested in upgrading your device we can offer you a discount of 20% if you live in the USA.

I'm rather disappointed because this 2720 has worked flawlessly since I got it. This ranks right up there with having to replace my Windows XP laptop...which also worked perfectly until Microsoft stopped supporting it.

Bummer

Did the XP computer stop working when it was no longer supported? Has the 2720 stopped navigating?

I understand the frustration with this kind of stuff but at the same time there are physical limitations on devices that mean updates just wont work any more. I have two Garmin 660's (mine and my wife's.) I'm sure updates for them will stop in a few years.
