Here's my #2 post to getting past the required minimum to be a full-fledged member :smile2:

My recently purchased '14 with 6K miles has the Holeshot EFI SuperTune Pro Tuning Box and a Scorpion Redpower slip-on. The PO said the airbox mod was not done.

Ordinarily I'd left it stock in this department. The motor has enough juice to give me what I need it for.

But I'm checking to see if other Troopers have this mod done and what they're seeing in MPG. And also how accurate the MPG average gauge on the dash is. I've just ridden mine about 100+ miles and I'm showing 40 mpg as the average. I got the V-Strom for mostly on-road touring and hoping for 45+ mpg at interstate speeds.

I'm liking the V, I'm a first-timer on this style of bike. All my research reading :nerd: led to getting it. I like the '14-'16 model, but the new '19 XT Adventure is a great looking ride. I seem to always planning my next future purchases :ihih:

I just filled up this am from a weeks worth of riding errands and goofing off. 215 miles and it took 4.23 gallons. Almost
51 mpg. I must have been taking it easy . I normally get a bit less, 45 to 48. The bike is bone stock.

I have the 14 with a PCFC fitted and dyno tuned, I have dropped one tooth from the front sprocket, I have a Scorpion slip on and standard air box so we are very similar.

I don't much talk about fuel consumption, if I'm burning fuel I'm having fun so I try to burn as much as I can.


I only keep rough numbers and do them on long rides just to ensure I can make it to the next fuel stop.


I didn't have the bike long before I dropped the tooth so I don't have any stock numbers, with the slip on and after dropping the tooth my rough average was 5.5 litres per 100ks

When I fitted the PCFC and used the inbuilt map that suited my bike EG; stock filter & slip on muffler my fuel consumption skyrocketed, there was a improvement in performance but I could tell there was more to come.

I had the bike dyno'd and a custom map built, over the PCFC map I gained 4 HP, that was nice but my torque is where things got going, it was moved to a earlier and more usable RPM and in the lower RPM's it almost doubled, from 29 ft-lb of torque to 49.

Although the bike is now more fun to ride my fuel burn is the same as it was before the PCFC was fitted.


I'm a fan of paper filters and need a very good reason to get away from the stock filter system, in my case I'm more than happy with the results the custom tune got me.

As I said don't look to deeply into my fuel burn, every opportunity I get I'm at WOT.

Same here. I'm ordering the OEM airbox cover, snorkel, and filter and re-installing to get it back to stock. I'm leaving the EFI tune box in place, more trouble than it's worth to de-install. If I get some additional benefit from it, that's a plus.

I always chuckle when I hear someone asking about gas mileage after fuel tuning. Mine's a 14 with PCFC and Arrow pipes into a Yosh. My fuel is down from stock but who cares. After all, I am the guy who said 'Release the Hounds!'

It's been my experience that Stroms take a mileage hit past 75mph. Both on my 650 and 1000.

At interstate speeds of 80-85ish I've seen low 30s on the 650 and low 20s on the 1000 (on the current mileage display). Yep low 20s. That was into a pretty strong headwind but still at those speeds your won't get anywhere near 45 mpg on the 1000.

Heck my 1000 barely averages 40 off the interstate!

on my bike the mpg gauges are extremely accurate. I also log all my miles into Fuelly and they always match. I dont know how the mpg is calculated though and if tuning would screw with that. But, with my all stock bike i get 48-50 if im cruising back roads taking it easy. 45ish not taking it easy. Interstate, anything above about 70 mph im dropping to about 40 mpg. Its a steep drop at high speeds.

I have a 2014 dl1000abs stock except larger wind screen and the hard bags. All my riding is on the road. I've never gotten below 50mpg and that's on the back country roads where I live and having fun with the throttle and lower gears around the curves. I've been on several over 3oo mile trips, not interstate, and it gets 53-54 mpg on them, very happy with the mileage.

High speed (Revs really) are the biggest hit on mileage. FYI: with stock gearing, 5000 RPM = 75mph. On my stock 2015 1000, I get about 40-42 mpg overall combined on both highway and around town (225 miles to really empty tank). However... if i'm cracking off a long run at 5500-6000rpm, then it drops down to 32-35mpg. Conversely, if i back it off juts a bit to 4500-5000, then i'm touching on 47-50mpg.

On my old 650 strom, i put different gearing on it to drop the revs for a week long 3k mile trip, and the 400 RPM drop had a dramatic effect on mpg. at ~75mph, instead of getting the usual 50-55 MPG, i was averaging nearly 65mpg. I was pulling 350+ miles on a tank. Complete dog around town though.

Moral of the story: revs have a bigger effect than speed, and depending what kind of performance you want, if you change the gearing, you can get better mileage, but your riding style needs to match.

Thanks for the replies, it's giving me a lot of good information. If expected MPG at interstate speeds is in the 30+ range I can live with that. I was just wondering if the EFI mods were the main culprit, and it seems not. My riding buddies who have ADV-Tour bikes tell me they punch a big hole in the air. Changing out the gearing is a least a relatively easy option if pursued.

I'm still buttoning the airbox back up. Other posts in threads about this topic (Holeshot Performance.........soon.) have convinced me.

Thanks for the replies, they're giving me a lot of good information. If MPG is expected at 30+ (what Im getting) at interstate speeds I'm OK with that. I wondered if the EFI mods were the main culprit, doesn't look like it. My ADV-Tour bike riding buddies told me they punch a big hole in the air. If changing the gearing helps, it's a relatively easy job if pursued.

I'm still buttoning up the airbox. Reading posts from the Holeshot Performance.........soon thread has convinced me.

2014 V2, no mods but a slip-on. 190 miles split into 40 miles of testing and errands and 150 miles of 50 mph on average "trip" with sections of 10-15 miles highway and about 15 miles of gravel - 44.9 mpg on the dial confirmed by the "pump experience" - not bad but I wish it didn't ask for premium gas.

It's pretty much impossible to see any fuel mileage difference at highway speeds whether you are in 5th or 6th gear.

I don't see how anyone can tell any difference with one tooth on the front sprocket. I know I couldn't on my 2006 DL650.

Too many other variables make it hard to make any solid conclusions (and I have tracked my mileage with three Stroms over 500,000 km / 300,000 miles.)

About all I can say for sure is that higher speeds (actually higher airspeed) and lower temperatures hurt mileage noticeably.

car people don't see how a motorcycle can get better gas mileage on other than highway trips. on something like a dl 650 or 100, it is not very streamlined. pushing a hole through the air at speed burns gas. there are sports cars that have less wind resistance than some motorcycles.

So I too get better mileage running 4th and 5th on back roads and twisties than I do freeway riding to work and back. 45-50 off the freeway, and about 40 or so on the freeway, maybe a touch less. I have hard panniers, a bigger shield, and I am 6'6" and 300ish with gear.... sooooooo...

Also, the twin 1000 is not an overly fuel efficient motor... in my TLR, on the freeway I might get 40 if I am going slow and steady.... on the back roads having fun... forget it... like 30-33... 100 miles on that tank tops... a small price to pay for the smiles........

I have a 2014 1000 and I’m getting roughly 45 but I’ve never checked it with paper.I’ll have to try that to see how accurate the gauge is.

40-42 from day one. I cut the log off of, turned an adapter on the lathe and welded it to the straight through exhaust off of a BMW S1000rr. Still getting 40-42. No tuner.

It’s a little disappointing. My Buell 1125CR, which has the Austrian made Hellion V-twin engine will get 50. My Aprilia ETV 1000, Rotax V-twin gets 47. Both these bikes are up on h.p.
