MP Cycle Designs New "Sport Screen"

Late last year, Paul at MP Cycle design told me he was working on a new sport-style windscreen for the VStrom. I had been looking for something like the Zero Gravity windshield that was available for the earlier VStroms. When a prototype unit became available, Paul offered me a chance to try it out. Summer is here in South Florida, and with the heat, the more air you can get, the better, so the timing is good. I've been using MP's Touring screen, which is about 30% larger overall than the stock Suzuki screen. It does a great job of keeping the wind off, but like any large windshield, it hardly makes the bike look sexy.

The first thing I noticed about the new screen is it's very cool color. It's BLACK, about as black as it can be and still be translucent. Because the Strom has so many black parts (in particular the front fender) the screen really fits the color theme. And everybody wants a color-cooridinated motorcycle, don't you agree? :D The next feature that stands out is the complexity of the shapes in the screen. It has a center "bubble" which then blends into the rest of the screen with several smooth bends. The top of the screen has a sporty curve to it; sort of a "swept back" look. Paul has cut this curve so the top of the screen maintains a flat horizontal plane across the curve. I'm emphasising these details because I don't think the photos convey just how trick this screen really is. Lastly, the screen follows the lines and angles of the Strom's front fairing perfectly. The provided mounting system puts the screen in very close to the bodywork, perhaps 1/4" or less.

On the road at speed, the screen produces a smooth, steady flow of air that is quite comfortable. I'm right at 6'. and for me, the airflow is such that there is no pressure on the chest, but there is some on the helmet. That's fine, because I can really feel the air now from the Nolan helmet's venting system. With the big screen, the helmet vents were pretty much useless. I also noticed a marked difference in the feel of the front end of the bike. The steering seems lighter now, especially at speed. I suspect the larger screens produce downforce in addition to their greater weight.

My understanding is that the screen will sell for under $150. I don't know when Paul will have them on the website, but if you're interested in a sporty, custom look for your VStrom, you might want to send Paul an email at: [email protected]. I will post the photos later today.

Performance Update

Tonight I had the opportunity to try out the Sport Screen at high speed. I had the saddlebags off, and was able to open the Vee up to over 125 indicated. The Sport Screen was definitely in it's element. By leaning over the tank with the bottom of my Nolan helmet's windshield even with the top of the Sport Screen, I had a perfect flow of air just over the top of the helmet. It was GREAT! It's easy to forget how cool the Vee is at speed; 80% of the time I'm commuting to work with the Givi bags hanging out, stuff bungeed to the luggage rack, etc. The whole effect was very reminiscent of my '02 VFR; a composed, solid feel whilst hauling serious ass.

I'll still be using the Touring Screen a lot, but this Sport Screen is a keeper for sure!

I have the same setup from Paul and I gotta tell you, it is great.
I have been using it for a few months now and it is great for warm weather. Smooth airflow around your helmet with no buffeting.

I did put a small .5" rubber spacer between the bottom mount and the screen to position the bottom of the screen out further and lower the airflow lower on my chest. There is some play here do you can dial it in to where you want it to be.

The screen looks great and works great.

It will stay on until the weather cools and the MP sport touring screen goes back on.

I just took my first ride with the MP Cycle Designs Sport screen. FANTASTIC!!!! Finally I'm in clean air, which is something I never achieved with either the stock and Givi screens with or without a Madstad. There is a lot of air, but that never bothered me as long as it wasn't turbulent. That fact that it also looks cool is a bonus!

Works and looks great, super communication and fast shipping. Highly recommended. ;)

The sport shield is great

I ordered a MP Designs 14" sport shield last week, got it yesterday and installed no problem in 15 min. Wow what an improvement, no buffeting at all, at any speed. my one negative about this bike has been solved. It looks better than the stock and the bike works better with it on.

Stone:D
