I was off work today, so I decided to gear up and hit the road on the WeeStrom. I left Colorado Springs, headed up in the mountains on Hwy 24. After Lake George, I turned north and headed for Hwy 285 and then I looped back through Deckers, Woodland Park and back home.

After turning off of 285 and heading toward Deckers, both my fuel lights started blinking and I had 240 miles on the odometer. I decided to risk it and make the dash to Woodland park, where gas can still be purchased for $3.19 a gallon.

Long story short, the last 15 miles were a bit stressful....wondering if I was going to run out of gas. But I didn't.

I pulled up to the fillin station with 280.6 miles on the odometer.

Then I put 5.344 gallons in the tank. The math shows that I got 52.50 miles per gallon. If I press my Math skills further, I would have been able to squeeze 304.5 miles out of the 5.8 gallons.

Now understand that this is with full Givi bags, a lot of riding over 8,000 feet elevation and climbing over a couple of passes, one being 10,000 feet. I think that is pretty darn good.

My point here is.....Once both my lights were blinking, I was able to ride another 40 miles and then I still had over 0.4 gallons in the tank. Is this what everyone else is seeing?

Glad you enjoyed playing with your remaining fuel. You gotta enjoy life's little pleasures.

I think I put 4.88 gallons into a tank that was 20 miles into the second indicator blinking. That's second indicator blinking = 1.25 or so gallons left?

Maybe I put 4.31 into a tank 10 miles after the first blinker came on. 1.5 gallons remaining?

That's all I have for data.

Will the Wee actually take 5.8 gallons? Or do you have to keep filling it up and letting the fuel level go down to get that last two tenths of a gallon in the tank?

Thanks for the data!

Dear John,

Many thanks! I am getting just a little more than 50 miles per gallon when I ride with several Florida Stromtroopers around twisty roads. That is not an economy ride, because we use lots of gears and brake fairly often.

I have not tried to stretch my gas, but this summer I will be challenged to do so, with quite a lot of inconvenience if I miscalculate. My planned route to the northeast corner of James Bay passes a sign that announces it is 380 kilometers to the next gas. That's about 250 miles, so it doesn't leave me much flexibility for side trips or use of low gears. I admit that I plan to carry two gallons of gasoline, but I will try not to need it.

My Wee-Strom's VIN ends 1876, and the bike is red, so I call it Colorado. It was perfectly happy at 11300 feet in your state, and treated your lovely mountains as contempuously as it did the anthills in Florida.

I cheerfully rode 30 miles today, with both fuel blinkers blinking, because I knew the reserve is generous. I have never managed to buy more than 5.44 gallons of gas, even after 45 miles of double-blinkers. (When I bought gas today, I didn't fill the tank, because I will be shoving the bike onto a trailer in a few days, and every pound less is important to me!)

I understand that the fuel pump may beat itself to death in a hurry if I really do run out of gas, so I surely do not want to hear the engine sputter.

I actually ran mine dry once....fortunately, it died in front of the house. I put exactly 1 gallon in a gas can then drove it to the station and filled it up....it took 4.72 gallons.......0.08 shy of the 5.8 advertised.

I would say the tank can take 5.8.

I am just amazed that one can probably ride 50 miles from the time both lights start blinking.

I paid $3.86 for 87 grade today.........

Still going to ride all weekend though!

I wanted to know how reliable the low fuel indicators were, so I monitored my first 5 fills on the bike - rode the bike until either the first indicator (fuel pump symbol) or both indicators (pump symbol and last bar of the guage) were consistently blinking, then filled the tank to the brim and subtracted the fill from the stated capacity (22 l). The result has shown that the indicators are pretty well dead on and consistent. The first one comes on with about 4.0 litres (about 1 USg) of stated capacity left and the second one comes on with about 3.3 litres (about 0.75 USg) of stated capacity left.

But if actual capacity is truly less than stated, as suggested above, I guess we've got somewhat less fuel in the tank than the above calculations suggest. But it still sounds like we should be good for 30 or even more miles even after both indicators are consitently on.

Note that, in my calculations, I made sure that the indicators would consistently stay on with the bike running level for a while. The calculation that drives whether an indicator is turned on is clearly not instantaneous; it is obviously averaged over a considerable period of time (many seconds, perhaps even a minute or more). I generally get 20-25 km (12-15 mi) of travel after an indicator first starts to come on until it is consistently blinking during level travel.

I started to run out on the interstate and was pleasantly surprised to find that i still rode for more than a mile in the breakdown lane and made it up the ramp and to the pump. It would run at about 20mph but crack the throttle open and it would start to sputter. 20 was fine by me. J.R.

20 is a hell of a lot faster than any mortal can push a 450 lb. bike.

I got 283 miles on a tank and sweated the last 30 miles.

I've put as much as 5.47 gallons in the tank on a different occasion.

The last 15 miles must have been downhill.
Not hardly. Deckers is around 6500' and not only is Woodland Park around 8500' there is huge pass in between. And nothing but pine trees and asphalt for miles.

Wow! I think I would have stopped and bought at least a gallon before I got off of 285 and headed to Deckers.

Gas was still $3.09 in Crystolla on Sunday did it go up that much?

That's a nice ride though glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for the backup.....as it certainly isn't downhill.

I honestly thought about adding a gallon, but I have filled up a dozen times with both lights flashing and still had over a gallon in the tank.....just wanted to test my resolve!!!! Like I said....pins and needles!!!!

The cheapest gas I saw the whole trip was in Divide at the Western for 3.19.

Here's a pic from that road I took a few years ago. Pike's Peak is in the background. I was headed south toward Woodland Park trying to beat the storm.

I took this with my old PDA (Tungsten T with a VEO) so the quality is not that great.

For some reason I can never stop and get good pictures of the twisty parts.:p
