I'm trying to install my engine bars from Motech on my '06 1K. I'm running into a problem however.

I'm starting on the left side of the bike since the long engine mounting bolt pulls out on that side. However the metal spacers that come with the longer bolt seem to be too long! When using the supplied spacer it causes the other support holes to be out too far (about 1/4 inch).

I can tell it's out too far because:

1) If I were to tighten it down as is, the bar that reaches over to the other side is way too close to the exhaust and won't line up.

2) There's apparently a new piece of adjustment hardware in the hole where the spacer goes on the '06 that must not have been there last year. So the spacer is too long.

I'm wondering if other 1K '06 owners have run into this problem? If so, should I just discard the spacer on that side and use a bunch of washers instead?

Thanks, -Chris.

(My guards arrived today, as well as my saddlebag mounts.. Just gonna sit back and wait for the answer...)
After strapping both sides on, the original spacer isn't as far off as I thought, and it should work OK. It's probably only about 1/16" to 1/8" off instead of 1/4" like I thought before.

So, what I'll do for final tightening is tighten the long engine bolt screw FIRST so that it is perfectly flush, and then thighten down the other bolts last. Any flexing at this point will probably be no big deal.

The left side bars stick out a little more then the right bars, but not too noticable. And the long replacement bolt they give you will stick out about 3/8 to 1/2 inch beyond the end of the nut which doesn't look good but hey, that's why we have hack saws right? :)

I remember it took two washers on each side for the lower bolts on mine. There is probably a varience for individual bikes.

Looks like on mine, two washers needed on the middle connection point on the left. On the right side everything lined up perfectly.

OK, what should I buy for the bike next? Windscreen, new fork springs, hard luggage, handlebar risers? I can't ride this weekend probably cause of the rain (teach me to buy a bike in mid Feb.) so I guess I need more goodies to strap on to the bike!! :D

Be advised that the directions for the Motech bars, when I installed them on my K4, had a mistake. One of the bolts that is of different length on different sides of the bike was listed backwards. I forget the exact details but just say for sake of illustration it said the longer of the two bolts went in the left side. In reality it needed to go in the right side and the bolt shown for the right side really fit in the left. I sent an email to the crashbar retailer to have them fix the directions before they sent out more copies of the incorrect instructions.

Ride well!

Yeah I noticed this right away. I just matched up the longer bolt to the longer stock bold and vise-versa on the other side. I wasn't even going to pay much attention to that diagram at all becuase they also had the long engine bolt orientation backwards as well! The head of the bold is on the LEFT side and their diagram showed it on the right side!

LOL, terrible instructions but a great set of bars dispite that. :)
