Hi everyone,
Prospective owner here.
Currently riding a 2006 Tiger 955i.
Have always have the DL1000 in my sights as I'm a sucker for a V-twin.
My Tiger is a bit cramped two-up so starting to look at other bikes. I've done the usual routine: BMW GSA, RT-T, Super Tenere, Explorer and of course the DL1000.

I commute solo but we take trips regularly. All up we're about 350 lbs without bags.
I can get the rear of the Tiger set up well nice and compliant but the front is always harsh.

Is a <2014 model is essentially a different version of my Tiger? Neither have any kind of ABS, traction control. Suspension adjustments are minimal; nothing up front, pre-load and rebound out back.

The >2014 models are appealing a) for their looks b) increased power c) suspension adjustments F & R

I see what look like good deals on per-2014 bikes: a 2011 with 15K kms, steel braided brake lines, riders, USB power ports for $6700.

It is like a new bike. My Tiger has over 51K kms so that's an appealing bike. But am I just trading a Triumph for a Suzuki?

The Tiger is not a DL 1000 just like it is not a GS, S-10 or whatever.

You are correct in assuming the 2014+ models have superior suspension and especially superior brakes. They also seem to have solved some of the fueling issues of the first generation DL 1000. Since the Tiger probably has better suspension than the first generation DL 1000, I think you might be disappointed in it for that reason if no other.

The DL 1000 can be set up to be a comfortable long distance bike. Probably a better road bike than some of the other Adventure bikes if all around everyday function and cost are a factor.

One of the reasons the DL 1000 is appealing is because of its large market presence (lots of aftermarket parts) and reliability.

My local dealer has a 2017 that he offered as a test ride. I might take him up on that to see how I like it.
