I notice my rear tire is nearing its wear line and I may have to swap it out before the end of the riding season. Currently I have Shinko 705s on front and rear, which I would consider 80/20 tires. Since owning the bike I've done nothing more off-road-ey than a single forest road and some gravel. I'm thinking of switching to a 100% road tire for my new rear, in the hopes of getting a bit more life out of it (I currently have about 4000 miles on it).

In the past I've gone against conventional wisdom and mixed brands on front & rear, without any ill effects. Anyone ever tried mixing styles?

There is no reason why you shouldn't mix brands or types, so long as you adhere to the manufacturers recommended sizes and realize that different makes and types may have slightly different handling characteristics.

the 705's arent known for lasting a long time but they are low cost.

You should check out the michelin anakee. Or maybe a BattleAXE Adventure A41.
