Just ordered new tires yesterday. Asked for the Metzler Tourance but the bike shop said they were replaced with the Tourance EXP. I told him to go ahead and order since I didn't think there would be much difference.
Looked on the Metzler web site this morning and they have gone through a tread re-design.
The reports I could find seem positive.
Anyone else tried them or am I the guinea pig.

I think you're the guinea pig. As such, you're bound to post evaluations, both initial and after you have them in use for awhile.:p
Seriously, I considered them until I ran into a real deal on Maxxis Detours, though I've heard that these has a fairly short treadlife. The EXP will most likely be my next set.

What a coinkydink. I just got reshod yesterday with Metzler Tourance EXPs. I'm coming off a set of old style Tourances that are approximately 2.5 years old and unknown mileage. The front was in reasonable condition, but the rear was quite squared off. I tried to get the same, but only the EXPs are available. I could do with something grippier on the street and can only hope for decent mileage and performance (hopefully not squaring off too soon despite my street bias). My web research turned up some negative feedback about wear on some GS forums. Maybe the lighter Wee Stroms will fare better.

I haven't even ridden them yet, spending my bike time yesterday removing and replacing the wheels to save $80 labor for that task. I paid $265 OTD (front & rear) from Mototcycle Tire Center of Las Vegas with my My2Wheels.com discount. There are plenty of V-Strom riders on that forum. Also, the VSRI forum has a running thread on these tires. I'm sure these tires will be wonderful while new, so I'll try to provide some feedback after a few thousand miles.

Just got mine on a little over a week ago. Maybe 350 miles or so and they are just fine. They seem somewhat better than the Battlewings I had before, particularly off-pavement. And the front tire handles the tar-snakes better as well.

Just got the call today and my EXP's are in.
They asked me if I could bring the bike over.
Minus 3 deg and ice on the ground, I don't think so.
They offered to pick up the bike and trailer it.
That's either great service or they are desperate for work.

I'm almost through my first set of EXPs...

The stock tires lasted about 7,000 miles. They still had some life left, but I was leaving on a trip. Replaced with Metzeler Tourance (not EXP).

The Tourances lasted me around 17,000 miles. Again, with a bit of tread left, I swapped them out for EXPs.

The EXPs now have about 6,000 miles on them, and they're nearing the end of their life... maybe 2-3,000 remaining.

I didn't perceive a performance difference between the Tourance and the Tourance EXP, although given the abrupt increase in tire wear, I have to assume the EXPs are stickier. As is, I thought both the Tourance and the Tourance EXP were equally impressive when it came to riding in the rain, gravel, or twisties.

What I don't like about the EXPs is the mileage. It appears that I'm going to get about half the mileage out of the EXPs as I did the regular Tourance. When time comes to change again, I'm going back to regular Tourance, if still available.

I find 17000 miles on a motorcycle tire to be far more than I would expect. I'm frankly amazed. If you get 8-9k on the current ones that's more in line with my experience.

Good job on some incredible mileage.

I had a similar experience on my Wee. Got about 6,000 miles on the rear EXP, completely squared off much earlier. I got about 10k out of the stockers. I am guessing the regular Tourances should give me significant more mileage.

Regarding handling, the Tourance and EXP feel very different, IMO. The EXP is a very stable tire in the turns and feels a bit stickier. The Tourance handles very well too, but I think the EXP is better. Being on my 3rd set of Tourances (on multiple bikes) I have always found the Tourance "falls over" very quickly, which you get used to easily. The EXP doesn't fall over like the Tourance. The Tourance also feels harder and I would expect the Tourance to bite into dirt and gravel better than the EXP, although I didn't really get a chance to test the EXPs in the dirt.

I never had the front tire wobble on the EXP that others have spoken of with the Tourance. Now that I have my new Tourances installed, the front tire does wobble a bit on deceleration, but its only noticeable if I take my hands off the bars while decelerating.

I will not be buying the EXP again as the handling properties of the EXP do not seem to make up for the excess wear. I ride plenty of miles , so I need the extra mileage. After I go through my current Tourances, I will probably have an even better opinion.

I think maybe that was from Jamie's Mexico trip? As a general rule, riding on tires in developing countries will last longer than the US or Europe as you are typically riding at slower speeds. At least that was my experience in Asia. Perhaps Jamie could confirm this. If you can keep speeds under 60mph its amazing how long tires will last.

This is true. The 17,000 encompassed my 16,000 mile ride around North and Central America.

That said, my riding didn't really change much when I put on the EXPs. As a rule, my bike doesn't go on the interstate. I still take the side roads, and zip around town running errands. And I've got a history of getting outstanding mileage out of my tires.

I think your statement is true, and perhaps the extra life I got out of my Tourances can be attributed to my trip. Yet, for me to get only 8-9,000 miles out of a set of tires is a bit low, in my own experience.

Not a bad idea. When my EXP was shot after 6k miles, there was plenty of life left on the front. I typically like to replace my front and rear at the same time. But the softer feel of the EXP versus the harder feel of the Tourance may be a bit strange...but maybe not?

Most people replace 2 rears to 1 front, no need to replace both at same time. Allot of tires mix and match very well on these bikes, the EXP and original Tourance might be a fantastic combo. The front wobble on the Tourance really sucks, but sounds like the EXP doesn't have it.

I have tourance tires and am wondering if anyone has tried tire that are more off road. Any experience you may share would be great

great mileage

I got 15k / 17k from my oem trailwings. I've just put anakees on and hope to get similar mileage from them. Couldn't find the tourances at as good of price but I wanted the regular not EXPs

I had the bike with the new EXP rubber returned to me Friday from the shop.
I took it out for a short run yesterday afternoon to start getting them broken in.
They feel a lot different but this could be due to the fact the old ones were a bit squared off. The bike seemed to want to dive in the turns hard.
The tread pattern looks less off-road that the old ones. Since 90% of my riding is on pavement and the other 10% on dirt cottage roads these tires should fit my needs.

I noticed this thread after I brought my bike home friday.

At 5,951 miles I replaced the factory Trailwings, front and rear last summer with Tourances. The TW's were pretty squared off, with some life left, but I was doing a lot of fire roads at the time and they were bad enough new on wet rocks.

7,606 miles later the rear Tourance is replaced with a new Tourance. The shop brought it in from the local warehouse on the same day, I guess they still have some of the old style tire around here. It was nice having a round tire in the few turns it took to get home.

Dave, could you tell me where you bought these tires and how much? I'll be looking to replace the stockies this summer.... I do about the same type of riding as you, 90% street, 10% gravel... but if I had better off road tires, I could see that ratio changing to 75-25 or so.

I'm just outside Kitchener.

Mileage drop not what I wanted to hear...

Just put my EXPs on last week. 12,000ish miles out of the rear regular Tourance that came off with tread between 1.6 and 2.0 mm at the thinnest points from various locations around the circumference. This is dead according to the manual for those that go by such things (Front tourance had about 10,000 and could have gone another few thousand at least but I didn't like the results of not replacing both tires as once, so both came off for new EXPs this time.)

I also had much better mileage on the tourances then the stock TWs (2-3000 miles at least). Needless to say if the EXPs drop me back down there or below there I'll be looking to scoop up some of the remaining reg Tourances if possible (dibs!).

So far I have nothing but good/great to report in the handling dept. Though no dirt roads or rain yet. I'll also report more as I get some more mileage (about 1000 miles right now) on them.
