While having a mid-afternoon meal at a Marion restaurant today I saw three bikes that appeared to be following the Highway 16 (north) route through town (made a left off main street (to stay on Highway 16) at the only McDonald's in town). Leading bike was a Vee or Wee - older / original version (might have been silver or gray). Don't know what the second bike was - think it was a BMW. Third bike was a blue WeeII (2012+). All might have had side bags - not sure though. Not uncommon to see Vees / Wees during better weather, but it's about 40F here today and these guys (gals?) looked like they'd made a day of it and had a few more hours of daylight in front of them.

That was us.

Here we are at Green Cove. Then on to Marion by way of Volney and finally home (Lebanon for me, Elizabethton for the other 2). Good ride, but cold.

I'll keep you in mind next time we ride.

Ha! The first bike was a 2006 red (the fastest color!) DL1000. Givis on mine. I was leading that section of our ride since I'd done 16 North out of Marion and the other guys hadn't.

2nd bike, 2013 Kawasaki Versys 650. 3rd as you called it, 2013 Glee (Ryan on that one... Hi, Ryan!!!)

It was a bit chill, so I turned up the heated gear.

You live near Marion?

Yes, but about 10-15 miles from there. I'm surprised that you saw my post. I didn't really expect a reply.

I hope you enjoyed yourselves. For this time of year it wasn't such a bad day for a ride.

I'm a newb here and to the vstrom for that matter. And I just so happened to browse this section of the forum. I was surprised to see your post, but excited.

Good (considering time of year) weather, good fellowship and new roads, it's safe to say we enjoyed ourselves.

PS - we were just checking out HM park, cause I had never been there. We circled back to Mickey D's to warm up and grab a bite. At least I think it was a McDonald's, the interior resembled an IKEA store.

I'm assuming that's the Green Cove near the Virginia Creeper trail. The building in the background sort-of looks familiar. Maybe a restroom for Creeper Trail riders (?).

If you're back in the area you might want to try a different road across the mountain Hwy 16 north out of Marion crosses. You just follow Highway 11 north out of Marion (instead of turning left at the McDonald's) for 3-4 miles then turn onto "Bear Creek" road. That road meanders along the edge of the valley for a couple miles then begins the mountain climb. The southeast-facing side of the mountain isn't super steep but the northwest-facing side sure is. Curves are so sharp you nearly have to slow to walking speed to get around some of them - about 10 such tight curves total, as I recall, to get to the bottom. Might be slower stuff than you like...

Yeah, if you're gonna be back in the area or running Highway 16 or 58 give me a shout. I spend a lot of time at work but I'll go along if I can.

Glad you enjoyed the day.
