I just wanted to point out that the windshield mounting screws to the Madstad bracket are very easy to over tighten. The bracket has rubber bumpers that go between the windshield and the mounting surface. The gap between them will allow the windshield to flex a bit as you tighten. DON'T EXPECT TO BOTTOM OUT THE SCREWS. The instructions tell you not to over tighten, but it's easy to do. After what I thought was a successful install last night, I went in the garage to find two stars on the windshield where it flexed around the bumpers between the screws. I think screw spacers or a rubber gasket the length of the bracket would be a better alternative, but the damage is already done. Hopefully this may prevent somebody from doing the same.

Yes, its very easy to over tighten a well nut. The instructions with the madstad bracket are very specific about how to tighten them, not by feel, but by the threads just starting to come out of the well nut. That is the trick I think. Mind you, for the covers, its too tight.

I had tightened mine to two threads beyond the bottom of the threaded grommet. I just checked and they have all backed out a little, and one is a little loose (this is with a givi screen). I guess I need to tighten them a little further, but I don't want to crack my screen.

I just noticed today when I was working on my wee that I over tightened the covers on my givi screen one is showing a hint of a crack but the windshield ones were ok no biggie backed it out a touch not going to concern my self with the windshield mount cover being cracked... the windshield mounts are certainly more important... I tightened mine to stick out approx 1/4" on the well nuts even in strong winds that grab the shield like a sail no problems...
