Yo,
new guy looking to buy a new strom. I prefer the 650 but am open to a 1000. my budget is 7 Gs max out the door. they are pretty hard to find used around here (Tucson) and I can quite afford a new one.

my other POS bike just went tits up and I was waving goodbye to my badass 93 subaru wagon as the junkyard flatbed hauled her away about a week ago.

I just moved 20 miles out into the middle of the desert (slight exaggeration there)

I need wheels!

I found a nice 2007 wee up in phoenix at western honda. to make a long story short DO NO EVER DO BUISNESS WITH WESTERN HONDA IN PHOENIX!!!! THEY ARE TERRIBLE AND LIARS AND SHADY AS F*&K. Ill provide details if anybody cares.

moving on. I found this badboy on craiglist and am going to check it out tommrow.
its a little pricey in my opinion but not outrageous.

does anyone have any thoughts? does it seem like a good value? obviously ill know more tommorow but just wanted to get some opinions.

2006 Suzuki VStrom DL1000 incl $3k extras, 21,000 miles

is 21,000 alot for the Vee?

I like all the shiny bits hes got on there, heated grips=sweet

like the color too.

Seems on the pricey side fir a used vee...keep looking, there are some good bikes for sale on this site. A fly and ride could be fun!

The 30 less LBS of the Wee will pay big dividends if it ever topples over on you in the desert......

If you have ever entertained even attempting to take your Strom off pavement, consider the considerable strength required to pick up a big bike.....the 650 is a lot of bike to pick up solo....I'm no weak knee'd panzy, and I had to really give it a my best to get the 650 back upright.....

The sales guy at the BMW dealer told me of his Death Valley exploits where his big GS fell over in a remote spot and he had a heck of a time righting the beast. Never ride alone or ride something light enough to work by yourself.
I dumped mine over at the gas station putting it on the center stand.I am the King of Klutz. I was able to pick the bike up fairly easily though.

I dunno I think it's a pretty good price for all the extras that come with it. High mileage though. I suggest you check out the DL1000 forums on here before purchasing though. 1000s tend to have some headaches. some of which this owner may have already fixed (although I don't see a Power commander listed). If you go into negotiations knowing what potential things you may need to work on, you can likely drag theprice down even lower (or find out its a good price if the owner knows about and has corrected some of the issues)

All that said, I second the comments about the DL650. my ride of choice. Smaller, Lighter, better economy, more fun (biased here, never ridden the 1000 :) )

21,000 miles, huh. Only another 179,000 left in that engine. No problem with this low mileage.

Are all those add-ons worth the money to you? The seller is asking too close to the actual value of the extras. The rough rule of thumb is that extras on a used bike are worth half their new value. In many cases they add nothing to the selling price but make the bike easier and quicker to sell.

In any case, all prices are local. If there is nothing else in your price range and this bike is as good as he says (likely it is), buy it and don't look back. Enjoy.

with all the farkles it seems like a deal. I've 115,000km or about 70,000miles on my 2007 DL 1000 ..... so IMHO the one for sale is hardly broken in. I've the same huge cases which protect the bike when falling down and can carry a whole lot of my shit when traveling.

thanks for all the relplies!

to clarify i meant "out in the middle of the desert" more in the sense that i cant take the bus anymore. there a tiny strech of dirt road, but Ive ridden my zx1100 down it now problem, and its obviously not the most graceful bike in the dirt.

that being said I do plan on exploring dirt roads here and there, and want to get to various reasonably remote campsites. that is why I was leaning toward the 650.

lordneeko thats a great point, and ive read about the fueling issues with the big strom. I will do more research on the 1000s.

I really do like all the accesories, its all pretty much what I would put on anyway, it would just take me a long time to save up funds. itd be sweet to have all of that out of the way.

179,000 left? has anyone ever actually gotton 200k out of dl1000? that seems unlikely. dunno if you were just exagerating to make a point but even if it only reaches 100k or 75k thats quite a few years of heavy riding still left in her....


what Im thinking is if i can get it down to 5700 or 5800 Ill jump on it.

If this person think's that they will get full retail for the farkle's tell him/her/it that you are Mr/Mrs/Ms cleverusernamerandom# and you are not Flo from the insurance company and you are not obligated to ensure that the Full Farkle Value (FFV) is returned to them.

21K is not allot of miles. Take the comments about being high with a grain of salt coming from 650 owners. If you valued the add ons at half price, say $1500 that leaves the bike at $4800. I don't find that to unreasonable if the bike is clean and runs good. See how she handles below 3000 rpms in second gear for around town driving. (lean fuel stumble) 1000's have a known problem. Also check for clutch chudder, you can research it here on the forum.

read about the clutch and fueling issues before i headed out, and yeah, clutch chudder seemed pretty bad to me! not terrible but definatly noticable. not what i would call a healthy sound!

other wise bike was a blast to ride and soooo sexy in the dark red.

however got back to parking lot and was checking over the bike...

MAJOR oil leak! looked like it was leaking from the front oil line (just left of the filter) from the clutch cylinder and slave cylinder and possibly from between the crankcase halves below said oil line! the bottom was pretty covered with oil and all the road grime that likes to stick in oil.

pointed this out to owner and he says "oh I had no idea...that could just be a few seals, you could probably fix that for 100 bucks"

yea....

and he said he wouldnt go below 6 grand.....

well the search continues

the best thing about my two bikes

me ex-EX250 and my present DL650 = no oil leaks - nada!

so much better than my cars.
