So newby here looking for any information I can get on a V-strom 650, I race dirt bikes currently actually I just bought a 2015 KTM 250xc-f and I am just curious what else two wheels has to offer and I really like the looks and the design of the v-strom. Of the adventure bikes all the companies have to offer the v-strom looks like the best bike for really adventure riding. My riding will ential mostly pavement pouding but I will be hitting some two track fire roads occasionally. I will be using it as a commuter bike during the week being on the highway and an adventure lets go places bike on the weekends. So heres where my questions start, one will a 650 be enough for the highway, I'm not talking about 85mph I'm saying max 75mph. Two; this question is more for the passengers, are they a half comfy bike to ride on the back of, I don't want my girlfriend hating to ride on the back of it. Three, is there any common problems with these bikes that I should know about before buying one. And finally are these bike easy to find and put accessories onto, like saddle bags, the trunk for the rear, the bars that go around the fairing, heated grips, and auxiallary lights?

Hey, I am also looking into a Vstrom. While I cannot provide information in regards to power/highway/reliability/passenger accommodations yet, I can say that you can farkle these things until your wallet implodes on itself. There is a huge aftermarket for these things which makes it very appealing to me.

I did over 2,000 miles riding at 75 to 90 mph for 2.5 days in temperatures ranging from 90f to 100f on my 2006 DL650 with a full load and it had well over 100,000 miles at the time.

Earlier in that bike's life I gave a friend who had crashed his DL1000 in Ohio a ride back to Toronto area. 600 miles on a bike that was over Gvwr with the two of us plus had luggage on the interstates riding at 75 to 85 mph with no issue.

My 2012 DL650 is even better at speed with load.

The 650 isn't a 1000 but it has no issues running at high speeds with loads and doing so all day.

Cant go wrong with a strom.

All you have to do is remember you are going from 10" to 6" of suspension travel and the rest is easy :)

I think the DL1000 is a good all round two up bike for mild exploring. I came off a KTM 950 ADV which I used for the same thing. I prefer some decent Givi or Shad luggage over the OEM stuff.

Riding two up on a DL650 would not be very fun to me, the bikes are really the same size, very close in weight etc. The DL1000 has much more torque. Unless your looking for slow with limited passing at highway speeds, look at the 1000's. The only downside is fuel economy, having 54 mpg averages are nice, my old 1000 gets 40 mpg average. I'm 230 pounds, add a passenger and a 650 ain't going to keep up with a DL1000 period. Been there, done that. People knock the 1000's too much, they run great set up right with a Power Commander. I don't know if I will ever return to a 60 hp bike, I rather have some performance. Riding should be fun, getting stuck behind slow cars is not fun to me. Its nice having an all round budget bike that can go quickly or putt around with camping gear on dirt roads. I find my seat has good passenger comfort, good room, fairly wide seating. Add a top box and its a decent place for a passenger. I run a Seat Concepts seat kit on mine, IMO all stock seats need replacing. I ran stock for a while, had to upgrade!

To me the Strom is an acquired taste many come to after riding bikes for years, its not exciting or pretty or cool or fast etc. Its just a mid weight touring machine in a ADV style that doesn't mind gravel roads. By far my favorite bike for the money, in the last few years I've been riding thumpers to a FJR1300 cross country. Still have the V-Strom, it works for me. I like the high revving V-Twin and simple maintenance. The older bikes are cheap and reliable when kept up, lots of used parts around. Fairly cheap to set up well, I did the suspension, engine guards, seat, wind shield, alloy handle bar, lowered pegs, fork brace etc.. still have less in it than my last new DR650... Bought my 06 for $3700 with luggage and a few extras. So far is been a huge value even though I've had to fix a few major things. My Strom is still cheaper and does the same thing that my KTM ADV did. I never go off road on such a bike, thats what thumpers are for. Used bikes are a gamble, I had to put about $1,000 in mine to make it reliable. But not everyone looses a stator..

Thanks for the responses they all are greatly appreciated, as for riding two up I weight 150 pounds and my girlfriend weighs about same, would that still be uncomfortable? I would be buying the 650xt abs model so correct me if I'm wrong but that should come with saddle bags as well as the engine gaurd bars? A skid plate, are those something I should look into?

I'm 215 and ride with my 110 lb daughter with no issues at all. Nice and roomy also. Love my '13 650. Good luck with your choice.

I think it's perfect

I have owned a 2013 DL650 for about a year now and have just a hair under 10,000 miles on it. My flagship ride so far was from the Raleigh Durham area to Cheboygan, MI round trip. The ride out and back were straight through.

I have added a Givi Trekker bash plate, Givi top and side bags, hand guards, and Oxford grip warmers, highway pegs, Rox risers, and an MRA windshield extension.

I am overall satisfied with the bike. I ride mostly on the street (95/5) and it is a very comfortable bike to ride on. It blocks wind very well and with the windshield extension, it's so quiet that I can actually hear the chain below about 40mph. It is a 650 and while some will consider this under powered, I have no trouble, even fully loaded or with a passenger (my wife is 115 pounds), riding at highway speeds for extended periods. I rode through the mountains of West Virginia and had no trouble keeping up with traffic on the climbs despite being fully loaded for vacation. I experienced a little monkey butt on the 1000 mile trip, but other than that, I had very little discomfort. I got between 45 and 50 MPG on the highway.

I did take it for an off road adventure on ORV trails in Michigan and it handled better than I thought it would. You can check out the picture to see what I took it through. It handled trail excellently and took mud like a champ. I sank it in some puddles up to the axles and let me tell you, that's when it being a 650 is a HUGE pro. I was able to rock and pull it out alone without much fuss. If you're going to be in dirt, rock, or anything except deep mud or sand, the bike will get you there. I take mine camping frequently and it carries what I need where I need it to go.

As far as accessories, you will have significantly fewer option for the 2013 and newer models but even then, the selection is adequate. Anything 2011 and older is significantly cheaper also. I have had no trouble finding what I need.

I would take my bike across Mongolia. And I bet Suzuki parts are easy to find over there.

I've made my decision and if I can find a nice used strom(12 or newer) I'm buying it. I have looked all over and I can't find a darn thing wrong with these bike(quite frankly its pissing me off I can't find a bad thing wrong haha) I'm glad I can't because that proves these are great bikes, and if I do buy a new one I will have it for the life of the loan. Hopefully by the end of may I will have my new strom. Its -2 degrees here and I want to buy the bike now.

Thanks, for me it was about weight, I am 5'10"/250lbs and I can comfortably handle the bike in terms of footing. I am more concerned with the bike comfortably carrying my fat butt up hills. I expect I will be fine, once the weather in CT gets above freezing for 10 minutes, I will test ride the 650 and 1K.

Your weight not an issue. That's the weight area I have been in (working my way down now) and I have had, in the past, passengers ranging from 100 lbs to my wieght no issues.

You just might need to shift now and then.

That is what I am thinking. Just need a test ride to verify I like the feel of the bike. As I have another bike that is not going anywhere, I want to be sure I get the right bike to be it's companion in my garage.

So my uncle found me what I think is a good deal! He found me a 2012 v-strom 650 he said it's loaded down with all of the goodies, the guy is asking 6750. I don't know miles or condition just wanted to get everyone's feeling about the deal!

Seems like a pretty good deal, and I agree with others here that the 650 has plenty of power. Acceleration is awesome, but the only time I feel where I could use the extra power is at high speed, just for passing really. Good luck!

Well I bought it, it has 12,000 miles and is in great shape! Now I just have to wait until the first weekend in April when the guy gets back from Florida to go pick it up.

Hey guys,
I'm new to the the forum and have decided to pick up a 2014 V strom 1000 but am debating on whether to get the Adventure or to buy the basic ABS and then pick up the extras separately. I don't really like the look and size of the stock bags and there are nicer engine guards and crash bars out there. What do you all think of the differences? Givi and tour tech make some nice aftermarket gear that looks better/tougher than the Suzuki Adveture offerings.
