i been riding an RC51 for years and have made two trips across the country on it. anyway i found a dl1000 and have been pondering trading it in. i just havent heard enough to convince me. maybe some of you folks could bring out some good points i didnt think about. how are these things on gas? i comute all year so that is an issue. tha rc sucks horribly. anyway thanks for any feedback..

As a year 'rounder myself I can attest to the willingness of the 1K to perform the task at hand. Any shortcomings the bike has can be eliminated through proper maintenance. Most of the trouble being experienced is from poorly set up bikes from the dealer/previous owner. (loose air-box boots, unbalanced throttle bodies, etc.).

There's also a robust aftermarket so farkles are plentiful. The best things to do to a Strom right off are
Seat
Windshield
43T rear sprocket (41T stock)
PCIII or TFI

Oh yeah, watch out for all the 650 owners that are about to come outta the woodwork....:D

DL1000 is a great bike, you will love it. Nobody is here to convince you that the DL1000 is the bike for you, take one for a spin and it will talk to you or it won't. Some DL1000's do have some rough spots in the RPM range, or other smallish issues as do all other bikes, as MightyShep mentioned just about all of these are due to imperfect set up by the dealer or former owner. Once these "tunings" have been addressed these are really sweet bikes and are comfortable enough to be ridden all day and performance enough oriented to give you a satisfied smile. I'd add Throttle Body Synch to Sheps list of things to do right away, very easy to do and all of the information is right here.

Well, I am not any kind of expert on this but I can tell you from my own experience that the v-strom is the way to go. I owned a 2003 RC 51 for 3 years then went to a 06 CBR 1000. had that for three months. I went to a vee strom after one test ride. I was trying to do a lot of longer rides every weekend and the rc and cbr were killing me. I was to focused on the discomfort and the bike rather than on the ride. That all changed with the strom. I also sold my RC to a good freind, and my other buddy rides an 04 RC
I tell you unless it is a long straight away they can not pull away much. and in the tight corners I will usually be leading the ride. Trust me go for the dl 1000 and never look back. Gas milage is definatly better... Good luck...

i think if i were to ride an rc51 for more than 10 miles it would do permanent damage to my lower back. you're gonna love the strom.
