Just want to get an idea of what the local dealer, stealer, labor rates are in your area. I live in South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale, and the dealer charges $90.00 per hour to work on my bike. I am going to get the book and try to do most of the work myself. At $90.00 per hour you would think they would get it right the first time, not so. It is a joke to pay this rate and have your bike sit in their shop while they fart around trying to figure out what parts you need. You would think that, if they sold it to you, they would have a clue. Please chime in of where you are from and what your mechanic bangs you for.

Love to find a good mechanic in South Florida. Anyone, anyone??

The dealership in Tucson has the worst maintenance department. Four days for the first oil change and checkup, after telling me by the end of the first day it would be ready. There was always some excuse why it was not ready. They had it for a week another time on an other problem I was having with the bike and still had not looked at it. I learned through this site what was causing the problem I was having, so I picked the bike up and fixed it myself. If I didn't have the extended warrenty I would tell them to BYE forever! The sad thing is everyone I know gets the same service from them-poor, and there is nowhere else to go:sad: .

You hit the nail on the head. There is one Suzuki dealership within a 10 miles radius and then the next one is 40 miles away. I wouldn't take my bike in to the local Suzuki dealer for all the tea in China. I've struck up a working relationship with the local Kawasaki/Ducati dealer (how's that for a combo?) to work on my bike. They are honest and get the work done when they say it will be done. Shop rate is $80/hour.

$85.00 at the dealership here in Charlotte and i have no problem with that. I know they have to make their money. What bothers me is that when i ask for a quote on checking the valves, The serviceman wipes the imaginary beads of sweat off his forehead, sighs and say's...$450.00 or so.
I check with an independent mechanic nearby who charges $70 per hr.. and he says,$225.00-$250.00.
In my business which is service oriented, I found long ago that i can quote by the hour or by the job. I charge all work by the hour and find that after paying taxes, insurance, employees and various other costs of doing business,
85 bucks an hour doesn't go far. My competition often charges by the job and therefore hide much more profit.
The above $70.00 an hour mechanic must have figured 2 or 3 hours to check my valve clearance and gave me an honest quote.(i think) The one at the dealership gave me a quote that was probably figuring double the actual time therefore netting much more profit. That profit is required to keep all those people working in that high overhead building. My independent mechanic has less people to pay and a much smaller shop. If he does good work, he'll get my business everytime. J.R.

The local bmw dealer charges $70, and does a great job. Other shops in the area charge $60 and $80 an hour. All vary widely when they quote jobs, so I think its pretty much irrelevant what the hourly cost is. However aside from the BMW shop I don't trust any of them. All have made major goofs when talking about the work they would do on the bike. I do all mine own work because of this. One guy used to race SV's so he seems to know what he's talking about. The rest... forgetaboutit

I do computer work for a local dealer and once asked the service manager how much he expects to get billing from each mechanic. He said he expects to bill 12 hours for each 8 hour day. What does that tell you about the priority the mechanic puts on doing a good job vs. just getting it done and on to the next one? In defense they do quote book labor rate and most times a good mechanic can do things quicker than book rate.

Still I would rather pay $100 an hour and give the mechanic all the time he needs to do it right and to notice any other issues that may have come up.
