I'm going to be taking a newbie passenger on a rather long trip, and my Wee will be wearing its Pelican cases to carry our gear.

I have lots of experience riding solo and 2-up, and I've found that even experienced passengers have a hard time mounting this bike with the bags in place. I relocated the pegs forward, and mounted the bags back a bit, but still it takes a nimble passenger to get up & over the bags.

I've seen several riders on the full-dress tourers (Goldwing, Harley Ultra Classic, etc.) where the passenger mounts first and dismounts last, and it seems to work quite well. The rider puts the bike on the side stand (in gear, I would imagine), and dismounts, thus allowing the passenger to slide forward and climb off the lower rider's seat.

I must admit that mounting the passenger first looks rather dicey, but it seems that my side stand is consistently stronger than I think it is. We are both rather light weight (me: 160, her: 140), so I doubt we'll overwhelm the stand if it's done gently.

Any other thoughts/tips?

As a new Wee owner, I've been working with my wife to find the right way to have her climb aboard with the cases attached. At this point, she is somewhat graceful at throwing her leg over and sliding on while I am already seated, but she doesn't exactly enjoy creating parallels between being a passenger on a motorcycle and playing on a jungle gym...

I'd be interested in learning what you come up with. Lord knows, we can use the help. :)

This is my first bike with hard bags {Givi} but my wife uses the same method we have used on every bike,I'm astride the bike as normal,she gives me a thump on the shoulder to alert me she's mounting,she stands on the left side with her hand gripping my shoulder,places her foot on the peg and basically extends her leg to standing height as she rises on to the bike and swings the other leg over the seat and places her right foot on the right peg,settles herself and were off !
Sheesh, that's complicated to write.

It should be pointed out that she is a just a touch over 5ft tall and around 50kgs [110pounds].

My wife no longer rides, which is a big part of why I'm now on a Vstrom instead of a Gold Wing.

While I've used both methods, and probably because of owning Gold Wings in the past, I do like the passenger on first / off last method. But the bike doesn't know the difference either way.

The side-stand can handle it no problem.

The main place where the passenger on first / off last method hits trouble is if the bike is too vertical to begin with. In that scenario, there is a possibility of a tip over to the right. Avoiding that is part suspension tuning, part co-rider largess management, and part rider parking spot selection. My wife weighs in at ~ 115 lbs fully clothed. On the Wing I would add a few lbs to the air pressure; on the DL I just leave the rear shock set to slightly stiff and forget about it.

Otherwise, I guess it boils down to the preferred method that is workable for the rider/co-rider.

The only method I trust to be incident free is demoed here in this clip I found on youtube.

I'd only feel 100% confident mounting a passenger first :wink2: with the bike on the centerstand.

Then I would step up on left peg, bend my right knee so that it clears the tank and place my foot on the right peg.

Then I would rock the bike forward and off the stand while manipulating the clutch and throttle so as to leave the parking spot in a perfect stand-up wheelie; accompanied by a siren like scream from the passenger. MASSIVE STYLE POINTS using this method.

My wife and I rode a GL1500 for over 25 yrs. I used to get on first/off last. Now that we are older, I help her get on first/off last. It is the same with the new to us DL1K.

My ex-girlfriend who rode with me always mounted after me, and dismounted before. My bike had a bit of extra lean due to the extra length I had dialed into the rear shock (Elka) and picking it up off the sidestand with even her fairly light weight (~130 lbs) sitting up high like that was difficult. She was young and flexible though :)smile2:) and had no problem throwing her leg over the Bestem trunk I had installed to keep her secure.

My wife would get on our old GS first, off last.We rode off the center stand too.
You do whatever makes you comfortable!
There isn't any right or wrong to personal comfort and feeling safe.

My wife gets on last, and complains bitterly about the required gymnastics. In fact, she's ripped the footpeg rubber off a couple of times with the pirouette portion of the routine. (I've replaced the footpeg rubber with a portion of invulnerable high-pressure industrial hose.)

However, she has so far refused to clamber aboard first, even if I am there to hold the bike. Not sure what to do about this standoff, frankly.
