This post is for future reference by any one experiencing the same problem

This morning I went to start my Vee2. All was normal (e.g., FI pressure run up, idiot lights cycled, starter worked). However, instead of starting the engine just turned over without starting and eventually the FI light came on.

I checked the kill switch, cycled the key in the ignition, and tried again. Same result.

After attempts trying the same thing and getting the same result I thought maybe the FI pump fuse had blown so I pulled the seat. Everything looked normal, but I remembered that I had been experimenting with electrical hook ups yesterday and checked the Phillips screws that attach the battery cable to the battery terminals. They were loose.

I tightened the Phillip screws by hand (didn't have a screw driver) and the bike started normally.

Given all the counter-intuitive aspects of this experience I thought it good to post this for future reference by others.

Loose battery terminals can certainly cause a host of problems. With my previous Vulcan that was always the first thing to check with most any electrical type problem. It's interesting that it had the juice to turn the starter, but still wouldn't start. Good to know these little troubleshooting tidbits to file away for the future.

I posted about loose battery terminals on Christmas Eve. Like you I had been playing with electrical a while previous to this happening.

In my case everything went completely dead. No lights, no sounds, nothing. Then it would come back to life as if nothing had been wrong.

It's funny as I often mention check battery terminals as one if the first thing to do when bikes don't start or have electrical issues.

Check both ends of the battery cables too. The loose or corroded end is not always at the battery. Vee2s appear to have iffy cable ground connections at the engine.

There are a number of issues that cause an FI. FAQ: Dealer Mode & FI Error Codes
Many of them are caused by the voltage around sensors to be out of range. A poor connection can easily lower the voltage out of range. I will say that a poor connection that allows the starter to spin is unusual. It's much more likely for the entire bike to go dead as the current flow required by the starter motor will turn a poor connection into no connection. Battery power is plenty to oxidize or even vaporize a marginal contact.

You can use thread locker. The problem is hardly ever the result of the screw backing out. Normally because it wasn't tightened in the first place or someone moved the connector and inadventantly loosened the screw. A good preventive measure is to put a glob of vaseline or battery post protectant spray on it after tightening. Helps reduce oxidation/corrosion.
