I found these LED signals on the web and thought they were really cool :cool: and the shape I liked. What I didn't know was exactly how cool they were. I ordered 2 pair for (obvious reasons) but they are only available in aluminum.

So I knew I would have to paint them. Here's a pic with taped off glass.
Notice in the poor picture there are 2 reds leads and one black lead. I will explain this later.



Here they are pictured with the 2nd of 6 coats of Krylon. Alittle sanding of the aluminum finish was needed at the beginning.

And yes, many light coats were much better than a couple of heavy coats. the first couple of coats will be bumpy, but they will smooth out with the additional coats.

Now that they're painted to match the bike, it's time to install.
Let me first state that all lights were removed and installed without removing any fenders or cowlings. I know people have asked if it is possible and the ansewr is yes. My mechanic and I worked together and he has small hands and could easily get into those tight areas. The rear was the worst but it is do able. I did use a 1/8 inch rubber shim behind the front lamps. This was placed between the lamp and the plastic cowling to add bit more clearance and it made the lamp sit at the proper angle.

Now I know you've been waiting and wondereing about those 2 red tails...... The units actually has 2 colors. Amber and red. As you look at the next pics you will see various stages of on and off for the colors. You can not connect the red in front(illegal in almost every state on private vehicles) but in the rear I wired them as additional brake lights. (kind of like hyperlights) There are two rows of red in the middle as you will see.

Yes I substitued LEDs for the regular tail light bulbs also.

The other surprise is in the flash. Two led's remain lit as the other creating the arrow flash.

Here are some side notes:
The next time I have to paint, I would take the units apart..seperate the stem from the head. I also just, I mean like yesterday, found a powder coating place in South Florida.
These are all metal units so would not recommend for offroading as if you were to hit them in a laydown/drop, it will defintley put a hurt on your fairings.
Blinker/flashing rate: yes it is faster than normal but tolerable. I purchased Trick Flasher but have not yet installed it. This will allow me to program 5 different flash rates. I also install Back-Off.

Next farkles:
LED amber side markers. These are little dots which mount in the plastic by drilling a hole and setting them in. I will wire them to the flashers as side blinkers.
LED running/brake lights for the OEM side cases. This will take some doing as I want to create an auto type connection when putting on the luggage so I don't have to manually plug and unplug. I believe I have found a strip of 7 LEDs which can be mounted behind the red reflector with little problem. This farkle will be down the road....

No really, do you have some URLs for those lights?
What bulbs did you use for the LED conversion on the taillights?
Any difference in brightness or even-ness of lighting on the brake light?

Also how difficult was the wiring for the turn signals? I figure the wires for the turn signals are already there, but did you have to fish for the brake light wires?

I used regular LED 1157 replacement bulbs. I bought the larger ones (19 leds) but then decided not to cut the taillight housing. Brightness is a little less in day light while runnng but brake light is brighter. The blinkers are definitely brighter.

Curious on your comment "The other surprise is in the flash. Two led's remain lit as the other creating the arrow flash." Do those two LEDS stay on all the time even when the blinker is not in use? I guess they would be tied into the the marker parts of the rear light if that is the case.

That is a sweet setup. Something that I will definetly look into. I want to go flush mount units from the front, but these in the rear, dual wired with brake light modulator would be a great (i.e. cage noticeable solution).

The two leds only light when the blinker is active. The blinker has two stages. all amber lights or just the two leds. Hope this answers your question.
