Anyone interested in a ride in the Laurel Highlands sometime this summer? I've been doing some exploring on my DRZ (just in case things get gnarly) and am trying to get a fairly full day of dirt roads (or back roads) linked together. I know SpongeBob probably has lots of local info, but I'm just a newbie on the dirt roads in the area. Here are some road ideas:

L on Nebo Rd (on 381, just past the RV park)
L on Stanton Rd
Cut across Indian Head Rd to Neals Run Rd (to Seven Springs ski resort)
Continue straight on Henry Rd (thru resort)
Cut across County Line Rd to Fire Tower Rd (to route 31)
R on 31 toward Hidden Valley resort
L on Tunnel Rd
L on Skyview Rd to jct 381
L on short bit of 381
L on Camp Run Rd (to jct 31)
Cut across 31 to Jones Mills Run Rd
Cut across County Line Rd to Triple Creek Rd
R on Pritts Distillary Rd (just before one lane bridge sign)
L on Glade Rd
R on Coles Run Rd
L on Blue Run Rd
R on Grindleridge Rd
more dirt roads (TBD) to 653
head south to Ohiopyle
more dirt roads (TBD) to jct 40 near Summit Inn
Skyline Rd toward WV border
more dirt roads (TBD) off/near Skyline
more dirt roads (TBD) south of I-68 (Bruceton Mills) to route 50?
lots of potential for a long day of unpaved fun

Still plotting out the best combo of roads and exploring stuff to find new ones. There are also some dirt road options north of the PA Turnpike in the area of Linn Run State Park and Laurel Mtn ski resort (Hickory Flats Rd, etc).

Thoughts?

Linn Run Rd
Right on Hickory Flats Rd
Right onto Bakersville Edie Rd
Right onto Kuhntown Rd, which turns into Tunnel Rd.

I also know of a road over Derry ridge that would be DRZ friendly, but not so much for the Strom. Its a little rocky on the 217 side of the ridge, but is much nicer on the 259 side. If the gate is open at the top of the hill, you can go all the way up to the firetower. On a clear day the USX tower in Pittsburgh is supposed to be visible. Here's a link for a map I made: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=40.334507,-79.240265&spn=0.065689,0.159645&z=13&om=1&msid=104912885990656569981.00043581fa2e68ba0a33d

I've explored some of the paved roads around Mt Davis. Need to head there and look for some dirt. Perhaps more exploring this Saturday...

Do you know any all/mostly dirt routes to get from route 22 (near Seward) to the Laurel Mtn summit more or less following the Westmoreland/Somerset county line?

The other area I need to explore more is between 40 and the WV/PA state line on either side of 381.

When it comes to roads around between 22 and 271, I'd talk to Greg. We rode together once and he seemed to know the roads up that way. A friend of mine lives in New Florence and knows a lot of roads in that area, I try to get in touch with him someday.

Been doing more exploring and hope to have a nice 100 mile loop that starts/end in Ligonier sorted out. Some paved roads, but mostly dirt. I'm going to make a test run to check out some other road options. Hoping to keep it Strom-friendly assuming the bike has a skid plate and a rider with some dirt experience. Been doing all the exploring so far on my DRZ. Working on extending said loop to the WV border, making it close to 200 miles.

Hi Garry---just found you here. I'm still interested in riding some dirt on the Wee (or the KLR if it's nasty!). In fact, now that I have the Wee, I need to get my knobbies back on the KLR...hmm...maybe it's time I learn how to change my own tires! LOL

Hi Scott,

I'm heading out on another exploration ride on Sunday with a few local guys, mostly on thumper dual-sports (I'll be on my DRZ). Going to poke around Mt Davis or maybe north of Laurel Mtn ski area.

Later!
