I just picked up a 2002 DL1000 last week for dirt cheap and figured I better find a good forum to join as the bike needs...a few things.

From what I can tell it had been sitting outside for years. If something could be rusty, it was rusty. Unfortunately, this included the gas tank.
The bike reeked of varnished fuel, even with the tank closed. No matter, it was cheap, so I loaded it up and brought it home.
Top priority was getting it to pop over, so I started stripping bodywork until I could find the air intake. I hooked up my jump pack to the battery and a friend crank while I sprayed starting fluid into the intake. After a few seconds (noting that the oil light was going off), it fired for just a second. Success!
