So I am going to be taking my first big roadtrip on the Wee and also this will be my first "camping" bike road trip. With a buddy of mine on a farkled SV650 we are attempting the Lake Michigan Circle Tour:

over the course of a weekend in early September. Does anyone have any particular sights to check out along this route? Any dirt roads that I can take the wee on?

Thanks!

I can think of a few stops along the way up the SW coast, as well some very nice scenery farther north. Part of it comes down to what interests you? Some people want to catch every lighthouse along the lake (a trip I have debated actually involves visiting and photographing every light all the way around lake Michigan then someday Superior, then Huron, etc.), others could care less.

As far as dirt roads, I don't know of many that are worthwhile near the coast - there are a couple fire lanes along parts of the shore line, but they are all dead ends with summer cottages at the end. There are a couple parks (Grand Mere, for example) that have short stretches of dirt or gravel leading back to them, but not really optimal riding. I do most of my dirt road exploring out in the country where I live, about 15-20 miles east of the lake. If you want to make a short detour, I can give you a route that could make for some scenic riding away from the lake for a few miles.
Farther north (closer to Petoskey and that area) I think there may be more options, and there are definitely some in the UP. A couple points in the northern part of the lower peninsula that should definitely be on your list are the Tunnel of Trees from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, and a ride through Wilderness State Park.

My Two Cents

I would go a bit further north to the soo locks, cross the continental bridge into canada and follow the canada side of the lake superior coastline over to wisconsin / minnesota and then follow the Missisippi river south down through Iowa and further. Avoid Chicago by staying west and south of it.

Sights / Stuff

Aerostitch Factory -in Deluth MN
Balltown Iowa- Great german bar & restaurant (Called Breitbachs) & Scenic Overlook
National Fishing Museum in Northern Wisconsin (Building is Shaped like a Muskie)
Gooseberry Falls State Park- Canada
Amethyst Mines in Canada-Along Coast
Diamond & Gold Mines in Canada Along Coast
Redwing Minnesota-Memorable Strip Club :)

I can e-mail you some pics if you wish.

Agree on Cross Village and Tunnel of trees on the way there. Then eat at Legs Inn in Cross Village. South the Leeland Penesula is ok riding. Ride the big bridge. Get a pastie in the UP.

Thanks! I will consider all of the suggestions. I can't avoid Chicago, since that is my starting point :D
