I was riding back from the Newport Jazz Fest this morning - I took a detour out to Long Island to visit family, so I was on the Southern State. As I'm ambling along at about 70, a bird does one of those fly across my path things that they sometimes do to cars. Since I'm not a car, tweety gets sucked around my front wheel and impacts with my boot. Felt like a robin. Anyhow, I look in my mirror and there's tweety, feet up, middle of the highway. I felt sad, but I was glad it wasn't bigger.

I redeemed myself in Center Moriches by stopping to help a box turtle across the road. 0:)

Ick.

I almost wiped out a juvenile pheasant or turkey out in the back country yesterday. 3 of them crossing the road (to get to the other side, apparently), the leader slowed but progressed into my path, and at the very last .001 of a second jumped forward, couldn't have missed him by more than an inch.

MSF instructor, when asked, said if the animal can be eaten in one meal, hit it. If it can't be eaten in one meal, try to avoid it.

Steve.

The Vatican is angry

This past M,ay I was on a Honda Rebel (don't laugh it was paid for) doing about 55 MPH (really) just before dawn and hit a cardinal.

It got caught in the front left turn signal, before I could stop, it fell or flew off, not sure what happened to it.

To repent, I did ten Hail Marys and vowed to attend Mass every sunday, and I'm not even Catholic!

Welcome to the bird killer club, haha. I hit one the first time I really got to ride my VStrom. Got stuck between the fairing and windshield until the wind caught it and it blew off...bloody feathery mess. I've also taken a bird to the helmet on my Vstrom.

Damn my Jaws are tied I am so depressed that you killed a bird that I am just speechless I can't post anymore now, I have to go say a few words for the poor bird. May he rest in peace, poor bird. Maybe tweety's cousan is saying poor tweety was trying to hit the dumb ass motorcycle rider in the face and he missed, maybe next time.

A while back I was riding along and this blasted robin flies halfway across the road, turns 90 degrees, and flies right into my helmet, like he was _trying_ to get hit. That one I don't have a lot of sympathy for.

The one that I do feel bad about is the owl that I hit around 2 AM one time--never found the remains but considering that he did $2000 worth of damage to a Jeep I'm glad that I wasn't on the bike that time. No way I could have avoided the owl--he came out of the darkness at the side of the road at high speed.

I'm sure you've all seen the "flips the bird" thread...
There is something about this bike that attracts birds, rather than scaring them off. I have had more close encounters of the winged kind on my strom in 4 months than on all my other bikes combined! I have even had a red-tailed hawk come down out of a tree at me. There is something really strange going on... I'm having Hitchcock flashbacks.

Guys, I'm in Arkansas County Arkansas, and we have huge flocks of Geese here every winter, and I've noticed that as I pass a field where they're feeding, they will rise and fall back like a huge wave, its really a pretty neat thing. I've watched the other vehicles in front of me, and they ignore them, but as i near, the wave starts, and some of our rice fields around here are a half mile or so wide, and its a pretty neat thing to see as the Strom goes by!!!! I don't know what the sound is, whether its the motor or the wind, but the effect is really cool!!!

A few close calls but no real danger so far. I did see a co-worker almost take out a grouse on a hardly used road a few months ago. I was about 20 yards back and as I saw this I thought this ain't going to be good. The grouse flew up and away the last second.

I had a chicken cross the road in front of me once. I tried to stop and ask him why he was doing but he took off. I guess we will never know now.
