Key in ignition issue

Last summer while on a bike ride to the Dakotas, I had an issue with my ignition that I am curious about if anyone else has heard of or experienced before. I was at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, and after the tour of the cave, I got all my gear on and was ready to head back to camp, but my key wouldn't go all the way in my ignition. After my riding buddy put some oil on my key I was able to get it in but it wouldn't turn to get the electronics of my bike turned on. Had to get my bike towed and the ignition replaced at a dealer, but I have always been curious if anyone else has had an issue where they can't get their key in. No one I have talked to has had an issue with this with a bike or a car so I think I just had a bad ignition tumbler.

I had the identical problem with my 2018 1000. Took the tumblers and case to a locksmith. He said the factory had it where the key was bottoming out on the end of the case. He then used a hammer to tap the key until it turned freely. As a secondary measure he filed a bit off the tip of the key. 40K later and no problems.
So my advice to anyone who this happens to is take a hammer or something and pound lightly on the end of the key and see if it turns.

If some would be thief tried to jimmy the lock (at the caves parking lot, public space...), that might cause a key issue also but signs that a thief was at work would likely be evident on the cylinder

This^^^

Or possibly something got into the lock that you pushed down to the bottom of the barrel and stopped the key from inserting fully?

Quite a few possibilities.
Sometimes lubricating the lock can help prevent this. LPS 1 works great, it doesn't gum things up and won't hurt any elecrical systems.
